A. To Read Vehicle Mileage

To read the vehicle mileage (minus any miles lost while the ABS module was dysfunctional and not supplying the speedo signal) using an ELM327 device, type the following commands in a terminal emulator which is talking to an ELM327 v1.4 (or higher), which is plugged into the '97 Volvo 850 OBDII port. You type what follows the ">" prompt. I've included both the commands and the responses for when I did this very thing yesterday.

Those two commands and their responses get all jumbled up because the 2nd line is overwritten by the 3rd line and is then overwritten by the 4th line. Just keep going with the remaining commands, since the ATL1 starts the spacing of the lines correctly and the remainder will appear readable.

If your ELM327 doesn't say either "AUTO, ISO 9141-2" or "ISO 9141-2" for the ATDP response, then you need to issue an "ATSP 3A", "ATSP A3", or "ATSP 3" command so that the ISO9141-2 protocol is the default protocol. The ATSP command will only need to be used once on your ELM327 device if the 1996-1997 Volvo 850s are your only cars. The ELM327 will then remember this setting.

That last command is one way to read the vehicle mileage. It will take a few seconds to respond, since it is the first data being sent to the COMBI and therefore implicitly triggers the ELM327 to begin an ISO9141-2 Slow Initialization sequence. The response should take about 5 seconds or less.

To interpret the response to ECU 51's B90300, you can do one of two things:

1. Read the description of the response to the ECU 51 B90300 request at:

B90300 - Vehicle Mileage

and determine how to interpret it yourself.

*OR*

2. Cut the 2 lines in your terminal emulator display (or its capture log file) containing the ">B90300" and its "85 13 F1 F9 03 xx xx cs" response, then paste them into this Paste Volvo 850 communication here box. Be sure to click in the box before pasting, then after the paste, click Interpret, and wait a few seconds for the results on a page titled Volvo 850 keyword D3 B0 protocol interpreter results. It will have a box titled Gleanings which will show the interpretations, the line which it interpreted, and usually 1 line preceding that one.

The "Gleanings" for the B90300 request and its response listed above were:

B. To Read/Clear SRS DTCs

You can read and clear your 1997 855 GLT's SRS DTCs with the ELM327. I just posted instructions on how to read and clear the 1996-1997 Volvo 850 SRS DTCs (and the COMBI, ABS, AW 50-42, and Power Seat DTCs) at

The 3 SRS DTCs which I know the internal ECU 58 2-digit hex DTC to Volvo 3-digit SRS-nnn translation for are:

ECU 58 DTC 02 -> SRS-211 -- Drivers airbag short circuit
ECU 58 DTC 03 -> SRS-212 -- Drivers airbag open circuit
ECU 58 DTC 04 -> SRS-213 -- Drivers airbag short circuit to ground

Hopefully, you can use the SRS DTC clearing instructions and save you a trip to the dealer. But don't be surprised if you can't clear all of them. I've only been able to clear 2 of my original 3.

Wow, thank for the extensive information, however, the OBDII scanner I am using I don't know if it's capable of this.. and if it is I have no idea how I would program all that?

I pulled 2 codes successfully however, and used a mitchell program to see what they were

codes - P0410 P1308
P0410 is an air pump that I believe may not be working fully,
P1308 is apparently the acceleration sensor, which I'm not sure is exactly.

ALSO. A concern I now have is that something else may be happening with my ABS system, Though I'm sure it will solve a few problems, I've noticed my speedometer works, indicating my speed probably quite accurately, however, the odometer doesn't work, If the ABS module is in need of replacement then how is my speedometer working? Could this just be a freak occurrence or am I still just confused..?

The odometer gear broke, it happens to all of them. We have a very good writeup in the repair database on how to fix it. You can get the gears through IPD or from my favorite vendor www.odometergears.com. I always replace both of them but it is almost always the small one that breaks first.

The ABS module may fail partially. For example, the electronics dealing with one or more of the solenoids may not be working, while the speed signal is still being supplied accurately to the Instrument Panel.

It was, in fact, with such a "speed signal working, but automatic braking working only part of the time" ABS module that I originally located the ECU 51 B90300 source of the Vehicle Mileage. I used that partially working ABS module to give me a working speedometer while sending my original, "speed signal not working, ABS not working at all" ABS module into Midwest ABS for repair. That way I only had to pay $55 and I had a working speedometer during the wait.

If the speedometer is consistently showing what you think is the actual vehicle speed, then it is very likely that the Vehicle Mileage in B90300 is being updated as it should.

What should I do about these codes? - P0410 P1308
Like I said before, the car runs and drives very smooth, maybe at times a little unresponsive but barely at that.

P0410 is a SAS (air pump) error code. Seach the site for "SAS delete" and you can permanently cure that problem with a 99 cent diode from Radio Shack.

P1308 is often due to a bad accelerometer. I have never had to replace one but I have read that Hyundai uses the same part and it is only about $30.00 from a Hyundai dealer.

I get the impression that you might be trying to type the ELM327 AT commands, B9xx KWPD3B0 requests, etc into a WinXP or Win7 CMD terminal window. That's not what we are doing.

We are using "terminal emulation" software. Of course, once you get the terminal emulation software downloaded and installed on (or extracted to) your computer, then you can start it from the CMD window if you're so inclined, instead of starting it from a shortcut.

What I've personally used is: Hyperterminal, Realterm, STNterm. Some download links and instructions are available in the item Requirement #4: terminal emulators. It has links for those and other terminal emulators.

My strongest recommendation (for those that are using MS Windows based systems and want to scan '95-'98 850/S70/V70/C70/XC70 using its OBDII port) is to download volvo850diag.zip (v0.7 or later), extract it, then follow its instructions to download Realterm and setup volvo850diag and Realterm to be used in conjunction with IE and Javascript. It will semi-automate the scanning process so you don't have to type hardly any individual commands. Once it is setup, you run it by displaying your "local" volvo850diag.html page, then clicking whatever scan buttons you want to.

I would also become very familiar with the entire ELM327 Reads Volvo 850 and S70/V70/C70/XC70 Mileage page linked to above.
