2003 V70 D5 - swapping a BCM for a used part

OK - so replacement used unit arrived yesterday and fitted today. Have to say things are looking much better - I have a working speedo again. Reading the codes I have a couple of warnings...one is for the Yaw sensor....whatever that is...I'm guessing something to do with the DSTC maybe. The other warning is for the ABS sensor on the left wheel....now I've already changed the ABS sensor and carefully inspected the ABS ring so will need to do some head scratching on that one. The 3rd warning is indeed for configuration (BCM 0076) so I'm a little worried I may have a problem. Just in case it's useful I've included the BCM code dump along with the date stamp for the BCM...as you can see things are close to the original but not quite there.

Yaw sensor when fitted is under driver's seat in a match box sized enclosure.

The front left wheel sensor can be the typical solder reflow problem that the ABS modules are famous for.

Configuration can either be ignored or attended to by a dealer; it may be that your car wasn't fitted with a yaw sensor however that BCM could be programmed to look for one; I always thought that only the XC90s of this vintage had these fitted.

Not really. BCM 0076 errors says that.

0030669458A that software for 4 wheel drive DSTC configurations.
08685406 that is used with manual gearbox and 4 wheel drive & automatic gearbox both DSTC.

That's really helpful cheers doublebug. I'm thinking I may be better sending the used unit back....the guy I bought it from was very helpful and was willing to send me another unit to try if this one didn't work. My car is manual 2wd with DSTC....is there any way of telling which software is on which unit other than plugging it into the car and reading it...at the moment it's a bit pot luck + am thinking the unit half works....well it works better than the previous unit which gave me "brake failure" and no speedo!

If you can change unit so just change it.
There is no any way to check software in the unit without connecting it to the car.
You don't need to fully install it. Just plug it into the socket.

Just to keep you all update on where the BCM swap is. Today I decided to have a go at calibrating the sensors to the existing unit...I'm getting a replacement unit next week but figured I'd see if could be made to work with the unit I have already. At the moment I've got rid of the annoying ABS issues but still have an issue with DSTC which I/we think is due to the DSTC software being for the 4wd car not the 2wd manual that I have. I've managed to configure all but one of the sensors for the DSTC...the one I can't configure is the side accelerometer...this throws up a BCM 0090 error code. I'm assuming this is due to the software on the unit and I just have to wait for the replacement...if anyone has any suggestions let me know. I know the DSTC was working fine prior to the ABS issue so I'm going to wait for the new replacement unit. Other than the skid service message and yellow triangle on the dash everything else with the car is now back to normal which is great news....especially as I was considering selling it for scrap (new BCM from the dealer was 1,000 and wouldn't be worth doing)

New unit arrived yesterday...the replacement unit was from a 2WD S60. Unfortunately this worked less well than the first unit. On both units the ABS light goes out and the ABS works OK...when I checked both units have the same ABS software number as my original unit. The DSTC software numbers didn't match and for both units the anti skid service message stays on. Am now out of options...luckily the ABS now works so I can drive the car.

I'm now thinking of getting rid of the Volvo and replacing with something a little more reliable and a little less complicated....first and last Volvo I'm afraid! If I make any further progress I'll be sure to post here but think I've had enough for now.

Finally we have a winner...all the lights are now out and the DSTC is working properly so in my case the answer to whether you can swap the BCM is a definite YES!!

Right...on to the next problem...fixing the faulty alarm!
