failed lifter is the only thing i can think of, its caused by the holes in the lifter getting sludged up and the lifter doesnt get lube or the oil cushion. but they usually get stuck open not closed. you could have also spun a bearing, you need to determine if its a knock or a ping, then where the noise is coming from, top or bottom end. bad gas can also cause a ping, but you only have the miss in one cyl. like i said, you need a bore scope, peer inside that cyl and check the piston, walls and valves if you can. you may need to take the valve cover off and inspect the valvetrain. this is an interesting issue, you may be forced to have a shop look at it :/

Root cause for the rough start: leaky injector. Ghetto-cleaned, problem went away. And yeah, it all adds up so neatly, should have thought of it sooner.

Thanks abscate. For the record, I ended up having to replace the injector and that has 100% solved the rough start, the fuel odor, and the P0305.

Wouldn't a lifter be bad only when cold or all the time generally? This issue is more like a stumble accompanied by a slight clattering sound at high accel which ends abruptly with a corresponding surge in power. Happens at running temp, and I can repeat as many times as I like.

Definitely not a knock

The injector was the problem with that one cylinder so I'm less inclined to find a bore scope than I would have been absent that. And the engine is now vacuum-tight after all the hoses were renewed (horrible job, that).

Would it be completely wrong to suspect the TCV? I'm inclined to run down to the junkyard and grab one for swap - the motor I got the injectors out of is still very complete, and there are a bunch of 98 *70s there if that one's missing.

im happy for you, idk what i was thinking when i said bad lifter, youd have no comp in that cyl if you did. i guess i get caught up in too many different things and forget and mix up symptoms from different problems, something im working on lol. im glad a simple inj cleaning fixed your problem. means theres hope for us with odd-ball problems that seem bigger than they are.
