2001 V70XC Shifter Knob Wobbles

Post by xHeart »

The knob falls into Manual from D at a slightest touch, then wobbles in Manual.
Moving it back to D requires wrist work.
Up and Down gear shifting appears to be normal when in D.

Several DIYers recommend replacing Rocker arm PN#9463559.
See it here http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=234650

I am looking for a how-to.

many thanks.

yes, that is the plastic part that is most likely broken. Common failure in the older cars.

you have to remove the center console to get to it and replace it.

You'll probably find the yellow piece of plastic laying on the side.

I have removed the center console.
I will need to lift the upper part of the black box to access and replace the part. No sure how. I can see the two spring loaded plastic pieces, yellow and black, looking in from the gas pedal.

OK.
There are four horse-shoe like tabs at each corner, these anchor the upper cover firmly. A very hard and dry plastic material. A drop of machine oil at each tab loosened the grip just enough for the trim tool to slip off and uncase the top.
More photos coming.

The rocker arm installed. The yellow part was broken.
The shifter moves up and down as it should, and between D and Manual without a wobble.
Not sure if the spring is sitting properly, see arrow?

Hi guys
Wondering whether this procedure will also work for my P2 Volvo V70 D5 AWD, MY 2006? The service advised me to replace whole shifting gear for roughly 500 euros, this looks like a bit cheaper solution.
Thanks, your knowledge sharing is really appreciated.

You still want to buy the part and have it in hand.
It takes a good bit of effort getting to it.
Careful not to break the plastic parts in center console.

It takes an hour to get to the rocker assembly.
Loosen up the 10mm nut on parking brake handle for it to move and allow console come off.
Remove the metal bracket (if there) for grab-handle so the black box comes off straight up.

After removing the black box, it will become clear that the rocker arm is indeed broken, than that is what you replace.

Thanks, I take it as a yes that it will work also for V70. Will order and keep you posted or ask for further questions (more probably). Anything else to order that could be good to have in hand? Thanks!
