More info on my adventure...

Volvo dealer (MAG in Columbus) wants $210 to reflash the SRS module. They tried to update it but it wouldn't even take their update. About $70 for the software plus the ridiculously hourly labor rate!

Good news is he said the newer Volvos are not the headache these P2 cars are with software and modules.

I had exactly the same experience with my BCM trying to reload a second hand unit...in my case the guy felt sorry for me so I didn't get charged.

Dealer or indie?

There is no sympathy at this big dollar dealer (Bentley, Porsche, Landrover...). The guy who I was dealing with was nice and knowledgable but actually laughing about how often they have to reflash some modules. He said there are some cars that come in that were left off battery power for so long that almost every other module needed reflashed...he said one project took 5 hours. I'd like to think the P2 years were the first big design in module based computers...and somewhat of a failure in execution on some level.

I'm pretty pissed on this just on principle but again, I don't mind the live and learn aspect of it. One thing I tell anyone who is thinking of used Volvo ownership...if you cannot purchase and manage a Vida Dice expect a lot of time at the dealer.

Mine was an indie...I hate paying out when my car isn't fixed so feel for you. Agree on the design flaws...I don't mind complex if it never goes wrong.

Sadly for us there is a well known Indie Volvo shop but they are not much cheaper then the dealer and do book time for everything...so no real world billing. I did the fuel pump in 1.5 hours...they told me 4 hours, book time...FU!

I'm in the process of trying to match up a used brake control module at the moment...came really close to having it working. On the BCM the part numbers are all the same but the manufacturing dates are a code....03w105 for a 2003 car for example. Dunno if the SRS module is similar...I've been through a few BCM modules now and each one seems to have a different software version. I came really close with one module but it turned out to be from a 4wd not a 2wd...very annoying. The lesson I learned is that the part number isn't the full story and you need to match the software versions...at least on the BCM.

Good info. I know the guys at Erie Vovo claim that as long as the bosche numbers match up on the SRS module they will work...it was easier to spend $200 on reflashing the module then $100 on a used one and having such an issue as you mentioned.
