jpr0204, thank you. I after spending a few hours looking for a dropped seal, which I finally found and than a dropped bolt which I didn't,(bought a new one), I put everything back together and the car actually runs quite smoothly. Better than before. The check engine light is off since I disconnected the battery while working. Thus need ~200 miles for it to reset the code if there still is a problem.
Anyway, I do know how to replace the MAF, but I do not know how to run the specs. Why, by the way, did you not just replace the MAF element? Another question, did your volvo have any signs of a deteriorating MAF such as hesitancy, rough idle etc.?
So,jpr0204, if you could write how to test the specs on the MAF I would truly appreciate it. Even if the new seals fixed the P0172 code problem to know how to test the MAF would be of great help.

I replaced the entire unit instead fo "just the element" because I was able to get the entire unit for cheaper than just the element.
The measurement range for testing the MAF sensor is as follows:
Measurement range 12-640 kg/h.
Q (kg/h) 12.0 15.0 30.0 60.0
V (volt) 1.31 1.39 1.69 2.11
You need a halfway decent scanner to pull up the the data on the MAF to be able to check the measurments. A generic OBD-II scanner will probably not have the capability of looking at such measurments.
My car did have signs of a deteriorating MAF as well. My fuel mileage went from 18.1 City - 23 Highway to 9.6 City - 14.3 Highway. I also had a "hunting" idle problem as well as some extended cranking on a cold start, and the P0172 code ,all of which was resolved when I replaced the MAF.

Thank you. I just have a standard OBDII scanner so.... But I will keep those measurements in my volvo folder for future reference. My car does not seem to have any signs of a deteriorating MAF. I have and K&N air filter and every 10,000 miles I spray the MAF with CRC contact cleaner to keep the oil from settling. Seems to work well.
I must say that the car is indeed running smoother. If the broken seals were the cause of the P0172 code then it is another cause to be cognizant of. I cannot imagine i am the only one out there with this problem.
Of interest about one year ago I took the care in to have it scanned and looked at because of the decreasing milage. At that time the MAF checked okay. They blamed the low milage on my parking brake rubbing. I fixed that without any increase in mileage. No Codes, but may have been early signs of the fuel injector problem.

Just FYI: the cheap MAFs almost never work out. If you start getting MAF codes then replace it, the ECU will usually only be happy with a Bosch unit.jpr0204 wrote:Dasapir,
