1997 850 GLT Engine swap wth B5254T 2.4L LPT from 1998 V70

Post by Volvo4Life777 »

I have no clue why I have poured so much money into my 1997 850 GLT ,but I just might be able to drive it again with some help from a kind soul or two.

it is my fault that she threw a rod though so i guess i'd feel guilty if i junk here when it wasn't her fault.

I got a salvaged engine and while working on the swap my Mechanic asked me whether the ECU Wiring needs to be switched.

At the time I was clueless, but I did some research and I am slightly less clueless.

I found out that The engine control systems are both motronic 4.4

But is there a possibility of an uncorrectable CEL if we did not switch the ECU Wiring due to the difference in emissions systems between the two models?

The new engine has the (ORVR system wiring)? while the car and the old engine have the slightly (older system that only met the TLEV requirements)?

The Vin to the new engine is from a 1998 v70

Motronic 4.4, w/RuLo,<<<<< w/ORVR (53, 55, 56)>>>>

The old engine vin is the original 1997 850 GLT my car that is getting the other engine in the swap

My question:

Is there a possibility of an uncorrectable CEL if we do not switch the ECU Wiring due to the difference in emissions systems between the two models?

That engine will swap in seamlessly with no need to mess with the ECUs.

I have never heard of ORVR and TLEV, don't know what they are.

Best of luck with the swap. Sounds like it'll work OK for you. I have an LPT V70, 98 and it is a good motor. While you have the new motor out do the TB/WP etc. I'd give some thought to putting in a new front O2 sensor too. Maybe the PVC system. Essentially all the work on the motor that's sort of miserable when it is in place. You've got a golden opportunity to build up a nice reliable driver here.

onboard refueling vapor recovery, has nothing to do with engine.
Transitional low emissions vehicle, does have to do with some equipment fitted to engine, secondary air pump system in this case. The 97 GLT and 98 GLT are the same engine as Erik said so drop it in , wire it up, and drive off.

Thanks jimmy57, thank you for confirming that the engines are the same and also for giving some insight as to the meaning of the ORVR TLEV differences in the Motronics 4.4 system via the 8th digit of the VINs.

rmmagow, that is exactly what i wan a nice reliable driver, thanks for your vote also. Go Volvo! I will replace the PVC but i may have to hold off on the 02 sensor but will put in on my list of future repairs.

I would replace the rear main seal before swapping in the replacement engine. Most important replacement part IMHO.

Yes sir,

I ordered a complete timing belt kit, Rear Main Seal, PCV, oil pan liquid gasket and o-rings.

Rebuilt the Turbo and bought some replacement studs for the exhaust manifold.

I will pick it up this Sunday or next and post photos!

OK, so my mechanic has the subframe out and already replaced the new engine and attached it to the tranny.

I'm real bad with a camera sorry about the photos, Thanks for the advice. I ended up having to buy new axles because mine where shot but the o2 censor was fine before and should hold up

My Mechanic is almost done with the swap and I feel real bad because the wiring harnesses where in his words "totally different" one had 8 wires and the other had 9. Just in case anyone has this question in the future.

Not sure what he is talking about but don't feel bad because the wiring harnesses are almost identical. :D
