98 S70 wheel clunking

Post by dale1volvo »

Hi, i had just installed new brake pads and rotors in my 98 s70. I went to drive it and it almost sounded like a rubbing noise in the front left wheel, then that changed to a slight cracking noise and finally a very loud clunking noise...when i got back home two lug nuts were gone and the other three almost all the way loose. So i tightened them up put a fourth one from the back and drove it again. Same noise same result...loose lug screws. When i did the rotors i had to hammer both rotors off because they were stuck to the wheel bearing. I also know that i tightened the screws both times. Does anybody have a clue what it can be? Thanks

So long as the alignment pin is properly indexed on the wheel the only thing I can think of is that something on the hub is preventing the wheel from drawing down tight. I use a torque wrench and torque them a bit beyond the factory spec. I go 100 ft lbs in a criss cross pattern.

Did you remove the wheel to check the back of it or the brake components before you put the fourth lug nut on and snugged them all down?
