Hi guys sorry for making a new thread but i need a fresh post for this. I have a lifter tick. Today i took the metal shield that pulls away and covers the injectors. I Took that and put it to my ear and the loudest parts were from my fuel pressure regulator and the actual oil cap. This noise only happens when its cold, and when it warms up it goes away and don't come back until next startup if shes cold. Now i was wondering if it could be the fuel pressure regulator making the ticking? Is there a wire i can pull to disconnect it to make it stop working for a second, so i can see if the noise stops when i disconnect it. Other than it being that. Is it the o-ring? no matter what filters i use it still does it. I currently use the 12% bosch long distance filters. I use 10w30 oil and in the winter sometimes i go down to 5w30. but i noticed when its really cold and i first start her up i take of the cap there would be no oil present swishing around. I checked today and there was oil moving so what do you think it is. And how hard is it to do the o'rings? just unbolt switch and rebolt? or what? Is there any good repair threads on this? But i want to make sure its definitely the lifters. And i had this problem since i got the car 3 yrs ago at 116k and now theres 140k. please help.

FPR is mechanically operated by vacuum pressure.

The injectors are very noisy on the Volvo 5-cyl, ticking is normal. Heck, you should hear this thing.

The O-rings for the oil pickup tube (oil pan) in these cars can cause lifter tick by allowing air rather than oil into the pickup, but it's a rather messy/time-consuming procedure to go in there and fix those.

Could you shoot a video so we could attempt to diagnose the noise for you?

yes i will get the video. But its definitely a lifter tick. sense it goes away when cold i think i need to drop the pan. How hard is it. i did the full pcv and full timing belt service as my first major jobs on this car. so if i can do those jobs, with the right tutorial do you think i would be able to complete this job. And if i do complete this job should i just wait till theres no oil pressure. Its been ticking ever since i got it so i no it can probably last a lot longer lol. I totally had to say something else important but i had a major brain fart for 10 mins and still can't remember hahahahah! ill add when i remember, but ill get that video up.

Slightly different, as your oil cooler isn't attached to the back of the oil pan like his 2000 is.

Try this oil 5W-40 along with a WIX Oil filter. It's an inexpensive try since you've been dealing with this for 3 years. Had this in a 03 Odyssey for about 10K and it was still performing very well. Super quiet running all the time.

i doubt changing oils or filters will help i can try the wix i dont think ill change my mobil 1 tho. since it happens when it heats up its gotta be that pan lol. but why u picking rotella over mobil 1? thats what i use, and just about everyone else i see here. SO much work to keep this car going i love fixing it but hate the prices lol!

Lifters usually tick when cold. Do post the video.

I would NOT do the oil pick up seal unless you have low oil pressure. All because a lifter is going bad doesn't mean you have oil delivery issues.

I only use Volvo or Mann filters. Mann filters are so cheap through online suppliers, why use anything else?

If you have 1 bad lifter, not sure if it will bother anything except being noisy. I'd be tempted to leave it unless you plan to keep the car another 5 years.

Not all motor oils are created equal and not all cars work well with Synthetic. Mobil 1 Synthetic has been off my list for over 15 years. Was my choice starting the mid 80 and I've been changing oil since the late 70's. Until two years ago I was OK with Fram although I have used Mann and other name brands.

so how would you check the oil pressure to determine if its the oil pickup oring or just a bad lifter. And from my hearing it sounds like its just one lifter.

Where the oil sending unit would go. Eliminate the oil pressure for peace of mind and or try the 5W-40.
