ETM Recall/software upgrade only??

Post by EJVolvo »

I just heard the ETM software upgrade is now part of an "official" NTSB recall...........although the replacement of the defective part does not seem to be part of the deal.

Both are part of the deal. They are going to try the software first and if that doesn't solve the problem, then the ETM replacement, all on Volvo's bill. Check out the more specific information in the ETM section of this forum or go directly to Don't site: www.vexedvolvo.org

Thanks....I've been to Don's site...great info about the extended warrenty etc. It is my understanding that until recently the software upgrade for the defective ETM was a voluntary action by Volvo and not a "recall", although there has been an ongoing NTSB recall investigation. I checked out the NTSB website, and unless I read it wrong, it now appears that the software upgrade is part of an official recall (effective a few days ago) and is now NTSB mandated. I also heard this on the news this morning. My only concern is that the recall seems only to be for the software upgrade, and that there was no part redesign or mandatory replacement ordered. We still have to sit on our hands and wait til the Etm fails (hopefully without killing someone)....unless, of course the new software actually works. I have my doubts on that one.

Rave reviews (by most) on the new software. Basically it makes the sensing of ETM issues less sensitive so you don't go into the slow down mode. You are correct that the ETM will eventually fail. Good luck and if you're having issue with your car I would highly advise getting it to the dealer for the software upgrade ASAP. By the time your ETM finally does fail I hope that there is an alternative replacement ETM available, even if it's by a 3rd party.

If you "catch it" in time and install the software, clean the TB (your dime), you may never have a failure.
The software slows down the potentiometers of the ETB so much that they CAN now last a very long time

I have a 2001 v70 xc awd and just had the etm software upgrade due to stalling, starting and idle problems. The dealer said they do the software upgrade first. If there is a problem down the road then the second step is take out the etm and clean it,(only if the code shows that what is causing the problem, then if there is a third time problem with the etm then they replace it. They told me only if the computer codes show that is what is causing engine problems

There's no code that shows a dirty etm

I know a code won't show for a dirty etm. They won't clean it unless the engine light comes on indicating a etm fault. If a code shows a etm fault then as the second step of the recall fix, they will clean it. If the engine light comes on and it is something else making the engine light come on then they won't clean it.
If it happens a third time and there is a code then they are suppose to change the etm.

My 2001 s60 runs well but I am afraid of ETM issues happening on the highway, so can I drive to a volvo dealer/garage to upgrade the software?
thanks
