I had a 94 BMW 530I wagon that the head unit did the same thing, I replaced it with a junkyard one and the problem continued. The head unit just kept getting a signal to go to mute because of a non-existent car phone. Eventually I went aftermarket.
Remember car phones? I buy lots of 1990's european luxury vehicles and when I find ones with the original car phones I always kind of laugh thinking of how expensive they must have been to use, compared to todays smartphone, unlimited long distance and web for $50/ a month cell phone plans.
