But...wtf?! Now it seems I have an exhaust leak, and it seems to be coming from under the heat shield? The engine started right up, running smoothly except for the chugging sound from down by the downpipe. I love how fixing one thing leads to seeing how broken something else is.
I didnt remove the turbo or the exhaust manifold during this repair. The chugging sound has been present recently, but now since the engine is so quiet it seems much much louder. Tomorrow I will post a video, but right now I'm gonna shower and try and sleep. I just finished this ordeal and my spirits are a little low.
Also, the exhaust is pretty smoky and white, is that a shitty job sealing the head gasket? Do I have to do this all over again? Or is that normal after having the head off, and will it resolve itself? I'm gonna look at it again in daylight, take it for a drive and see what there is to be seen. Why can't this damn car just work?!

Video coming in a few minutes, but first some info:
Drained oil, put in new clean oil, drained coolant, refilled with new clean Zerex 50/50 with distilled water. Tried new Autolite Platinums, gapped at .25, will regap to .28, will also try coppers later today. I used Permatex Copper Spray on the head gasket and the exhaust manifold gaskets. The injector on cylinder #5 has a different pintle cap than the other 4 (The guy who gave it to me at Lonsbury's in town seemed sure that it wouldn't affect anything).
I plan to check the timing again, regap those plugs, take off the heat shield and check the torque on the exhaust manifold bolts again. Other than that not sure what else I can do.

When I did the head on our S70 I found a crack in the exhaust manifold that I have yet to fix. Could not see it by looking at it, seen it in one of the pictures I tool checking for the bolts and washers.
It's possible that you got some water or cleaning stuff in the motor and that will have to burn off.
You may also want to change oil soon, once or twice.

There is also a chance that one of your exhaust gaskets slipped and fell out of place, hopefully not. Look with a camera.

The broken bolt cam out with suerglue and a dowel, after I noticed it was backing out while drilling with a left handed bit.
That's the head and cam cover as it came back from the shop, and the new valve. Last is the burnt valve that caused all this.

Yeah I'm hoping it's not the exhaust mani gasket. I'll keep you posted.
That was my thought on the smoke too...there as coolant hanging around in the block. But I blew everything out with an air compressor beforehand.

I know I couldn't believe that the cylinder had any compression!
Here's the video. This is down between the heat shield and the exhaust mani, looking at the downpipe coupling. See the smoke? It doesn't seem like pressurized exhaust smoke though which is weird...it's just drifting. The other weird thing is that after I turn it off it still drifts out a bit, like something is burning from heat. Anyway, I'll know more when I take the heat shield off. Another video then.

This is killing me, I can't figure out where the heck the leak is coming from. Taking it over to the mechanic in town to see if he'll let me put it on the lift and look at it from underneath.
Could be one more day of work involved in this. I would actually be relieved if it's a cracked exhaust mani, or a bad turbo gasket, as that would mean I did everything right.

Did they replace two valves?
A lot of crud has to burn off and out of the motor. In your video it sounds like you haven't run it much yet, based on how noisy the lifters (?) sound. Run it for at least 10 minutes in the garage, drive it around a little without reving too high and let it get nice and hot (not overheated!), the lifters should quiet way down, then you are in a good position to make a call on what is coming out of the exhaust.
On white exhaust, your best guide is whether or not the coolant level goes down. And check for that sweet smell of burning coolant.
Exhaust sound you just need to figure out where it is coming from. When you drive it, does the turbo engage properly?
