Re: APB: WARNING, Replace your cooling system hoses ASAP!

Post by jblackburn »

Failed cooling system hoses and overheating/head gasket damage is one of the most common reasons for cars ending up at the salvage yard.
Truth. One of the very few ways to actually kill a white-block Volvo (or for that matter, cars of other makes as well).

To all - this thread is temporarily locked until we figure out how to deal with it. Please report a post or PM a moderator (or Matt) if there's something here that upsets you.

For those who just want Volvo info:
Sorry this exists, but it's a good time for a reminder of the MVS rules.

Videos, technically:
If you're going to post a YouTube video URL -- yours or not -- might as well use the tags and make it "inline".

Videos, generally:
Encouraged!

Asking for donations or selling, subtly:
It's ok. Just keep it subtle. JRL sells cars, but he doesn't go overboard (on that). Matty Moo sells ABS and other related services, and he keeps it super cool.

Others' forum behavior:
Please PM or email me or one of the Moderators. Generally, we like to keep the front of the house very clean.

I'll unlock this topic because it is an important reminder, and discussion about it is good. My 850 is in this hose age danger zone, and this is a good reminder to me to start work on this.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for being an MVS member.

Ain't that the truth. Lol I have a site that I started about 12 years ago, before I discovered this and other forums, that I made DIY instructions on, the AtTheTipsWebs.com website. Putting together tutorials can be time consuming, as is doing videos. I actually enjoy it most of the time, helps me enjoy something in my day and it's fun helping others find out how to fix things, especially when they can't afford to pay a decent shop $90 per hour to do it. The videos are actually harder to do, less forgiving and more time consuming in most cases. I try to link videos that matter to a thread, not just randomly posting.

Again, I appreciate all that I have learned from and try to share the knowledge.

Replaced all the hoses on my 855R last month, even gave her a new expansion tank. OE volvo all around.

And boy did they need it! 96 with 113k btw.

Not all hoses pictured.

Really tho you need to at least inspect all the hoses on the car, once you do so you will probably notice its time to change. Especially the smaller hoses(exp. tank, upper turbo, lower turbo).

We had a 97 854 GLT towed into work recently. Guess what? Coolant leak at the cracked expansion tank. Lucky the woman was a smart owner(well not enough for PM), and turned the key off when the low coolant light came on.

I would even go as far to say check the expansion tank cap to see if its a gray or blue version. I've seen MANY gray caps fail.

Turbo coolant line, it si above the heat shield. There is also a short one underneath the turb, best accessed from under the car.

My lower radiator hose blew about 2 days after driving long distance to move. We had a Uhaul as well. Boy was I lucky. The hose let go by the block, the cam seal was leaking and hot oil gradually weakened the hose over time. I replaced all the hoses a couple months later when I had the time.

My car was lucky - no known damaged occurred as I shut the car off ASAP. The repair was cheap but the PITA factor was large. One thing I dislike about older cars is a reduced reliability and things like this happening. If you can head it off at the pass you are doing well.

In todays dollars these cars were $40k-$50k, hardly inexpensive. Like was said above people tend to buy a "cheap car" and don't take care of it. I was there once, for one I had no money to do it! So I can empathize. Fortunately the car survived that time in my life and I am better able to care for it (had it over 10 years now).

Notwithstanding a couple of later P80 cars, this Forum is for 2000 and earlier cars - so none of them are younger than 13 years. Belts and hoses 13 years old is just waiting to happen.

1999 on cars have to remember the two oil cooler-to-block hoses on the rear of the engine, below cylinder number 1, too.

Yes, that is the hose that inspired the "Warning" video.
