Clean the block meticulously and carefully. Quality gasket remover is hard to find now (the Permatex stuff is useless) but helps a ton. Don't scratch the block surface. You want the block to sparkle when you are done, without any new scratches in the soft aluminum.

Don't use Brillo pads like I did.

Try and find the CRC gasket remover in a red can.

Is there something I can do to smooth the surface of the block if I did scratch it with Brillo pads? Is it really that bad if it gets scuffed by the scrubbing pad?
