2000 S80 - won't start + no transmission selector display

Hello,

Bit of a story - please bear with me, it sets the scene

This is a weird one... Left the car parked all day, hopped in and it started OK.
Selected drive and drove off but noticed that the transmission was behaving oddly (almost like it was in limp home mode - 3rd gear).

At a set of red lights, I foolishly did what I've done before when the car has this issue (5-6 times in all), which is select park, switch off the engine, wait a little bit, start up and select drive. Went to start the car and there's nothing other than ignition lights. engine doesn't turn over. This is when I looked at the transmission selector lights and noticed they weren't illuminated. Looked at the dash transmission indicator and noticed it just displayed "D" no matter what was selected.
Removed the car from the traffic with the aid of a passerby and tried disconnecting the battery for a bit. This resulted in no change except instead of a "D", I have a "-" (like a single segment of "D" on the LCD).

Got the car towed home and left the battery disconnected over night as I felt that if this hasn't worked once it's bound to work if I keep trying it

I don't have a code reader. I have one on order, but it's at least a week away...

Does anyone have any suggestions? Where is the interlock/start inhibit on these cars? Seems odd there is no visible error displayed on the info panel but the gear selector doesn't display. I've had the usual issues (long shift into 3rd, transmission needs a service errors) with the gearbox but have been nursing it
and it's been behaving until now...yes, I know it will need a rebuild - just didn't want to have to fork out for this just now.

Frankly I doubt a code reader will do jack for you with this issue.... Start with the basics though before you delve into transmission issues.

Battery condition including terminals
Fuses & relays, dont forget the set under the hood for the ECU and starter motor relay, transmission control unit etc.

My experience with the immobilizer has been that the motor will still crank, but not start. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestion re fuses and relays - I'll have a look. Especially given no illumination for the gear selector.

Look up information on the "PNP" switch this feeds the dash and the TCU the position of the gear selector and if the signal goes AWOL the car won't start as it needs to know it is in park to engage the starter motor, these switches can go bad but also make sure the gear selector cable hasn't become disconnected from the input lever on the top of the gearbox - Mike

Ive never seen it mentioned before for the S80, but yeah the PNP switch is a good thing to check given your symptoms. Checkout the process for the S/V70 cars, the basic proceedure is the same.
Can you get your reverse lights to come on?

No reversing lights - I've checked the one fuse in the car (fuse 21) related to the auto transmission and it's fine and has power. There appears to be no power getting to the wiring to the gearshift park position solenoid or the gear selection lights. The gear position switch ("PNP") on the gearbox is IN the gearbox so not accessible. Getting at the wiring loom into the gearbox will be fun. VADIS uses a breakout box to connect into the wiring to perform tests...
Does anyone know if VADIS has wiring diagrams? Google is my friend, but it would be handy if its in VADIS... I know enough to be dangerous with wiring so just understanding whats connected to what and how would be handy...

Should be fuse 20 on the 2000 S80 and assuming it has the five speed auto box the PNP switch is bolted to the top of the gearbox case - Mike

Hi Mike,

The fuse is 21 on the S80 T6 which has the 4 speed 4T65EV-GT gearbox so sadly no switch bolted on the top.

Found some wiring diagrams. Just trying to interpret them!

Damn, I thought I had seen the PNP on top of my GM box but to be honest I never really looked that closely.

Hello,

I have had success! At least for the moment...

I removed the air filter housing and found the connector to the trans (goes to the various solenoids, trans position switch etc.):

Then I followed it to these connectors which I disconnected/reconnected one at a time and tried to start the car (the one circled in red was the cuprit):

I'll get some contact cleaner and contact grease and clean them properly...
