Hi everyone, new here.
Saw few threads close to my problem, but not quite, so I thought some of you experienced enough to answer my question. That's why I though to post on V70 and XC70 forum, surely the design is close enough.
Very proud owner of XC60 AWD D5 purchased new. I feel like I was the first one in Australia to order it and drive it. Full safety gear which I absolutely adore. Polestar upgrade worth every dollar.
Since last year, clicked about 90kkm Sydney driving mainly, I started to notice a faint occasional rattle clicking noise. Very slight, my wife can not hear it. Triggered by road imperfection , not really speed bumps.
If the car is cold, and/or not driven for say 10 hours, the noise is almost not existing. Drive for 20 minutes or more, or if the outside temp anything >22 c, you start to hear it. If it's a hot day 30C, the car reminds me of my old fiat 128!
noise description: like a loose muffler, like a plastic coke bottle rattling, from the driver side I hear it front left side. When I sit passenger, noise is much less, still comes from front.
No CV joint typical noise on turning either side.
I also noted very slight vibration on acceleration hard. otherwise, it really drives beautiful.
My garage is on sharp angle upwards. When I reverse from my house, I hear a metal tick tick tick per second on normal reversing speed. I can not hear that if the car on even surface.
Money is not a major issue for me, my problem is no one knew where is the noise coming from.
Debate about the source of noise from Volvo dealer and then other (respectful) suspension shops.
Things we replaced under my Volvo and 2 other suspension shops are:
Front Links -2 front shock absorbers- Strut mounts front both- front rear ?wishbone or something- finally, regreased the CV joints under my mechanic.
Please Help, I hate to sell such a nice car for what it seems to be a very faint but annoying noise.

When noise is heard does applying brake have any effect on the noise?
There are listening tools that are very helpful for such problems. Clip on microphones are placed on various pieces of suspension or subframe and the head set is worn while someone drives and selects one mic at a time to see where noise is strongest. Mics are moved until the loudest placement is found and that usually gives the answer. Noise travels oddly in cars and some noises seem to come from a location but are found somewhere else.

no relation to brakes, it was due to replace the brakes pads and discs, no difference to the noise.

(If I park the car early am when its cold, leave it in the sunny park, and come to drive it midday, the noise is heard within the first few metres).

Could it be the insides of the CAT's rattling?
The microphone tool I have is called the "Chassis Ear", it comes with 6 microphones, a box to switch which mic you want to listen too, and a set of headphones.
They have the wired and wireless mic version. Wired is less expensive, but you need to tape the wires to the body or use some other means to attach them.
The mic's are in clamps like the ends that are on battery jumper cables, just much smaller.

Found it wired on Ebay from the US for about $140. Will consider it.
I've been to a muffler shop told me all looks ok, just by looking under the car and hammering the parts. The rattle sort of "follows" a nanosecond after the small road bumps, not on the bump. Best way to hear it is driving slow running speed, put the car on N , and switch off the engine. I think sometimes I hear similar rattle on staring or switching off the engine. Mind you it's a diesel. No noises at all when revving the engine, wether on Neutral or torqued on brakes.
Not changing any more parts without discussing with you guys the possibilities. The mechanics here don't like to think for you, they just will do what you tell them to do.

What if you have your foot on the brake, not hard, will it still make the noise?
If it still does you can rule out the brakes. Have you looked at the sway bar links?
I bought the Chassis Ear a few years ago, got it on sale for $99 USD.

My moneys also on the baffles in the Cat or the muffler area.
Early signs maybe of internal breakdown and only showing up when the exhaust system is at hot running temperature and probably certain exhaust pressures also.
If it is that, it will gradually become more noticeable and under a wider range of temperatures and driving speeds.

you're on your own here down under, warranty ends at 3 years or 5 if you pay extra.

That Cat it is? Would it still be possible to make the rattle noise while slowly driving on N with engine turned off? Because that was an issue my mechanic said if the sound is there with no pressure thru the CAT it is not the muffler.

Typically if you tap the CAT with a rubber mallet the loose honeycomb inside will rattle.
I would think the CAT would rattle more when cold than hot.
Only a 3 year warranty on emission parts?
We get 3years on the car, except for the emission parts, which is 8 years or 80K miles IIRC.
