coolant level low warning
My wife just called telling me that the warning 'coolant level low, turn off engine' came on for about a minute then turned off. I haven't had a chance to check it myself yet. The car was sitting for 8 hours in 5 degree weather, could that be a cause for the warning light?

Doubt that it would cause it.
The important thing is to immediately check your coolant reservoir level and top it up if it is required to prevent engine damage.
Also check for any leaking hoses and puddles of coolant under the engine ,on the ground which may identify a leak problem.
Check for milky coloured oil or oily foam in the coolant reservoir which may indicate a blown head gasket.
After topping up drive the car carefully and monitor the temperature and coolant level closely to be sure there is not an ongoing coolant loss problem that needs addressing.

Thanks for the advice. Does using non Volvo coolant such as Xerox g50 void the warranty?

Zerex G-05 is one of the best coolants you can use in Volvo's.
The important thing is that the coolant is a HOAT type (hybrid) as opposed to an OAT.
Make sure the coolant is mixed to a 50/50 ratio with fresh distilled water.
Read the info at the link below also.
Verify your current warranty validity with your Volvo dealer.

Top it off and monitor it, dont worry about it for now...
If the level is OK, make sure the float is actually floating in the tank and that the connections for it are good.
