2002 C70 Top not functioning

Post by tomj2222 »

I just recently purchased a 2002 C70 with a non functioning top. The previous owner said the top would work intermittently. While driving the car home, the top switch would randomly start beeping then disappear after 20 miles. This intermittent beeping made me think that it was the switch that needed cleaned. After disassembling the switch and cleaning the terminals, still nothing! Right now we are at a total loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

You need to learn if there's a relay for the top motor (all high current drawing motors will use one)

Perhaps someone can chime in for it's location?

Once this is replaced you need to check for voltage going directly to the motor with a volt meter. If this checks out you'll need a new motor.

I don't know this system at all but it sounds like there is a microswitch back in the top that is telling the system it isn't closed/open all the way. That same switch likely inhbits the controller if it gets a signal out of synch with the rest of the inputs - this stops Volvo from being sued by people who open the top with the MIL trapped in the trunk.

Scour the internet for a legal wiring diagram as a starting point.

What is the best way to check the micro switches? The top is currently closed and will not open. Can the top be manually retracted in the reverse order of manually putting the top up? As for the locations of said micro switches, I've come across a 2000 c70 switch location diagram (http://www.justanswer.com/volvo/1ifbh-2 ... tract.html) . I'm assuming the locations should be the same? Thank you for the fast replies!

Get the propper scan tool and read the codes. It will tell you exactly where to look.

What scan tool are you referring to? Would it be VIDA?

No,
A VST (Volvo Scan Tool) is the tool for that top.
Where are you located?

Near Bedford, PA. I currently own a generic Bluetooth OBDII code reader (~$20 on ebay) that I use with Torque on my phone.

I'm not an expert, but I do own a 2002 C70 convertible. There is a way to open the top, manually, with an allen wrench. Look at your owners manual and for an allen wrench in your glove box.
My guess is an issue with a microswitch or one of the motors in the system somewhere.
See if this helps:

We have 6 Vols in the family, one is a 2000 C70 convertible. This summer the convertible top gears, motors, actuators, etc ate themselves up with no prior warnings. complete destruction. we do most of our work in the cars such as brakes, axles, struts, suspension, engine swaps, etc. After getting a complete top and all that goes with it we finally farmed the top repair out to a Indy Volvo shop. I would suggest you have it checked out by a service center that knows these tops. these tops are a ballet nightmare from hell.
