1997 850glt no start after sitting for two years

Post by inkydink »

Car was sitting in the yard for two years and I am trying to get it going for my son as a gift. Replaced the ignition switch, fuel pump, and fuel relay. The warning lights do not come on, the fuel pump does not engage And no spark (Spark plug was pulled to see if spark was present). The car does turn over and has a brand new battery. I am thinking it is the ECU but not sure. The only code it is throwing is P0410. Dont want to give up on it and take it to a garage, just need some help. Also car did run before parking.

No warning lights, would suggest a wiring issue, possibly a critter did some chewing. As far as no fuel pump, and no spark, could well be related to the first problem or a crank or cam sensor. I would definetly start looking for wiring first..

You where right critters did do some chewing in the abs module, but that is it from what i can see that should not effect or rather cause all of the other problems or would it?

The cam position sensor is more or less directly below the ABS module on the rear, firewall side, of the engine. The crankshaft position sensor is just below that on the bell housing. Both of those sensors have wires that plug in more or less below the distributor. Check those wires for signs of damage since, once the rodents get going, they don't stop.

Forget about the ECU, they just don't go bad.

Ground wires, wires under dash have become rodent food.

After checking everything, problem fixed!!! The middle J fuse was blown. Replaced it and everything came to life. Thanks to everyone that replied. Still have one little problem, when the accelerator pedal is pressed she bogs down and cut off. Trying to figure that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks to everyone that helped.

I think that the problem is from a possible fuel starvation.
Is there enough fuel in the tank & is it fresh?

If so...maybe fuel injectors are clogged from sitting that long.

Try to press accelerator pedal softly....you know 1000-1100-1200... rpm.

Did you drain the old fuel? 2 year old fuel can even make a Briggs and Stratton run like crap. Pour a can of seafoam with a few gallon of fresh fluid after you drain the old fuel.

I would think you could use the fuel pump to pump out the old fuel with some luck.

Fresh gas, can of Techtron from Chevron might help - but then get all the plugs out and start real troubleshooting.
