Hello! Fiance needs more appropriate vehicle with baby #2 on the way. Looking at local availability, I came across a 2006 XC90. Finace went to take a look while I was at work and she likes.
But I have a question about some research about this vehicle I have just started doing. I am coming across a lot of reports about transmission problems. is this something the 2006 XC90 is notorious for having issues with?
For that matter, are there any other common problems with this vehicle to be aware of?

Your potential buy is a five cylinder with 5 speed AW 55-50/51SN
The six cylinders XC90s known as T6s which were mated to a GM sourced 4 speed tranmission were notorious for early demise.

My Volvo mechanic loves the 2.5L he says Volvo has used it for years and it's easier & less expensive to repair than any of the other motors in the XC90. Due to the XC90's weight the 2.5L is a little under-powered but it still does a decent job. Since it has 90k on it. I'd be looking to see a little service history and I would certainly take it to a Volvo shop and have them look it over. The main thing you don't want is to buy an XC90 that was neglected. The vehicles really need the regular service and maintenance done to them to keep them in good shape. Look for the easy tail-tales such as burnt oil on the dip stick etc to see if the oil has been changed on time. Also keep in mind the vehicle is coming up on a major service interval at just over 100k, you'll probably be spending at least 1k to do all the service that is needed.

I recently upsized from an 01 V70 XC to an '06 XC90 V8 when we had our first child. We have a dog and an active lifestyle, and the XC90 has been a great car to use. I am especially happy with the driving dynamics. While the wagon all ways felt very roly-poly, the 90 is surprisingly composed and handles it self very well for a tall car.
That said, I would recommend you hold out for a V8 over the 2.5 Having the oomph to get the car moving when you need it too is very comforting for me. Plus, how can you complain about 311 hp? Gas mileage isn't great, but we manage 16-17 with mostly city driving.

Yes, I would hold out for the V8. After long research, I bought a 2007 XC90 V8 with 70K miles on it. The engine is superb, very powerful and has this sweet sound to the engine when you floored it. Not sure on the 2006 V8 model, but I do know that from 2007 - 2011, Yamaha V8 engines were installed on these XC90....
Good luck!
