1996 850R Keyless entry help

Hi,

I purchased this 850R in about 2000 - for whatever reason I did not get the keyless remotes with the car. This car has the alarm I think because when the doors are locked it blinks on the dash. I remember about a month after I purchased the car I went back to the dealer and asked about the key fobs or remotes.

I was told that in my area (Madison WI) you needed a different module due to RF interference in our area. I took way they were sayings as truth. They indicated it could be fixed for something like $300 for a different unit... I should have negotiated this BEFORE I purchased the car.

Fast forward to today - I am beginning to drive the car more and would really like the keyless entry to work as factory designed.

How can I figure out what I have and what I need? I searched and found some programming threads but nothing specific to what this.

UPDATE: Here is what I have = nothing...

So I guess I need a new module and and some keyless remotes/fobs. At least I can get he FCC "IDs" to match. If anyone has one or a set for sale let me know.

How does the unit mount in there?

I am assuming no - but does one of the FCC ID units work better than the other?

The R likely has one of the Guard series alarm systems which uses a different receiver and keyfob setup. I've never messed with one of the guard series alarms but the remotes are longer shaped and have square buttons. I'm not sure if they program the same or not.

Thanks for the update - I think it has the Guard II remote. Now the million dollar question is, do these come in different frequency's like the other units?

From what I read it looks like they made one frequency per country. I see the remotes online at ebay, but have not seen anyone make mention of frequency codes on these.

I had the same basic scenario as you...I bought my 855R about 4-5 years ago, and it did not come with the key fob for the alarm (it actually had an aftermarket system that I removed). Just a couple weeks ago I ordered a brand new remote from Volvo. THey did not ask any particular questions about frquency or anything, just verified my car was was an R. Next day, remote came in, and I programmed it no problem using the instructions in my owners manual. And yes, you have a Guard II system just like me. So you will not have the module next to the glovebox.

Thanks again to all who responded. You are correct I have the Guard II system. I picked up a remote epray and it worked perfectly!

Did you go through a dealership or called volvo? I'm in the same boat here with 98 v70.

The '98 is a different animal. That remote needs to be programmed with the PIN number for the car and it takes a Volvo tool to do it. Fortunately, the programming doesn't require a software download like the '99 and 2000 models and it is fairly inexpensive from an independent shop that does a lot of Volvo work. I think my local shop charged $35.00 to program a keyfob that I bought on eBay.

So to be clear, Is the "Guard", or "Guard II" system only in the R in '96, or might it also be in a Turbo wagon?

I have about ten fobs, only one of which is like the one pictured.

I don't remember if I had tried that one yet on my wagon, but I have tried the other two early types with small oval or squared buttons next to each other with no luck.

I think I'll dig it up anyway, check the battery and give it a try.

I've already done two of the oval type for my '93 that work fine.

There is no way to be sure other than to look at the alarm hardware in your car. If they did not have parts on had for the regular keyless - could they have used a Guard at the factory ?- maybe. I can tell you mine has an LED that blinks when the car is locked with key or armed with the remote.

If it is a Guard II then your car will have the remote keyless receiver integrated in the alarm relay located under the dash. It's a black one with a green 5 pin connector on top.

If it is a Guard I then I understand the alarm module is pink instead of black and with a similar connector.
