1996 960 Alternator light "on" on cold mornings

Post by spyder2000me »

Since the weather cooled this year, my charging system light began illuminating for a few minutes following cold startups. Except for this there are no symptoms.of an alternator problem. Battery isn't low, and the light goes out.

I've replaced the alternator and the belt and had no warning light following the work. This morning, the symptom has returned. Due to the conditions under which this happens the only way to test the system is by leaving it somewhere overnight so it will be "cold."

This morning, I decided to read up on VADIS and I found a statement that might have saved me a couple hundred dollars though it doesn't do anything for my concern something is on the brink of failure.

Under the VADIS procedure for testing the starting system, you are cautioned to make sure the generator continues to spin after then engine is shut down. Further, you are cautioned to be aware that when cold, it may take a few seconds to spin up fully as the bearing grease must become warmed.

I am embarrassed to not have read this first as it may be cause of my concern. Has anyone else encountered this? A few others may be soothed by this.

I had not experienced an alternator that contained a freewheel until now. I'll watch this thing closely until the weather warms. It didn't do this last year.
