Swapped out maf only sensor not whole housing

Post by jacsil »

Ok may start a new thread be Because I think my stutter and dying well not mine but the cars is fixed. Knock on wood and who knows right.

So a few weeks back before I change the hose and tighten the intake manifold bolts which seem to stop the stuttering dying I purchased an MAF sensor from a Nother person who is going to be junking his 96 850. However what I didn't know I could time was I should've taken the housing as well as the sensor.

So after putting the sensor in place of mine and Reporting That I had done so on this thread at Least one person there told me that was absolutely the wrong thing to do and remove it which I did.

I was never sure what my MAF reading should be the most recent ones have been 5.6 at Park while at idle and 7.56 At idle in drive.

I called bosh today to see what they should be he thought they were high and should be closer to 3 at idle in park. So I thought what the heck. I started the car up took the readings. Shut it down. Installed the sensor which I belive was made in 2004 . And installed it.

Started the car up and the readings were 4 g/s in park at idle and 5.9 in drive at idle I believe these are better numbers. They are 12 g/s at about 2500 rpm in park.

I still Have other issues Such as when I try to use reset the EC you by disconnecting the battery and leaving it sit for a couple of hours than taping the cables together I don't think it's resetting the long-term fuel trims. Or at least my code reader's acting screwy.

Immediately upon restarting the car it says my long-term feel trim is 21 a positive 21 if it cleared the fuel trims I believe it should start out at zero again. I'm Also getting funny O2 sensor readings that are different from before I did the reset now the swing isn't this great and the number and it having a tough time getting ready according to the code reader the lights for things like EVA and cat are still flashing so it's running an open loop not sure what to do about this part of it Also I'm not getting any short-term fuel trim reads and I've driven quite a bit of driving

I'd like your thoughts on the sensor I use the MAF sensor and also my problem with seemingly getting that code reader or long-term fuel trim and all that to get back in line

90% there

on friday i pulled over to make a couple of cell phone calls. I shut the motor off, mistakenly left the lights on, and with my cell phone plugged into the cig lighter made some calls. I think about 20 minutes maybe 30 went by when I tried to start the car and found the battery had died.

i jumped the car to start it using a portable charger i borrowed from the jiffy lube that was accross the street. drove home disconnected the battery and charged it over night.

The next afternoon i drove the car for about an hour solid and noticed that on the live data from the obd scanner that the o2 sensor looked like it was showing some life. with it briefly going up into .08 .06 etc and getting a few readings on the stft. the readings werent great as the ltft was still around 21 and the stft would briefly come. it was very high also around 21 even 29.

on monday my kids briefly drove the car. and then today when i got in the car and hooked up the code reader prior to starting the car i noticed that there was the long term fuel trim from the previous day was -.8 progress

drove the car several today total of about 20 miles durning this time the ltft was anywhere between -1.6 to positive 0.8. With it mostly being around -.8

the stft was fluctuating between -3 to pos 3. Maf readings were about 3.6 at idle in park.

So did my recharging of the battery help things along? the battery is only 2 years old. and if so does that mean i have a charging problem that affects the running of the car.

all of the ready lights on the code reader are now lit steady except for the CAT converter light. Hopefully that's next

Then on monday

850 still hesitating dying after additional repairs
not wanting to leave a thread without conclusions ( unfortunately for me this is just an update) My R after a lot of repairs, testing, swapping is still hesitating and dying. It is running better when not dying or hesitating. OH Its still throwing the crank positions sensor signal out of range check engine light

repairs, testing , and swapping, since the hesitating and dying began. 1) Crank position sensor - threw this code -
2) fuel filter
3) fuel relay
4) front o2 sensor -wasn't functioning properly
5) ect -seemed to be working but ohm readings were off-
6) intercooler hoses all of them -one had a tear-and they were origional
7) new ground wires
8) new battery

Some of the testing 1) fuel pressure ) smoke test - needle size hole found in air intake between maf and turbo- hose not replaced told this wasn"t big enough to cause my problems 3) scanning with both store and vadis 5) multi meter to test charging / drains etc.

Parts swapped out for a period of time to test 1) ECU 2) Crank Position Sensor (even though new) 3) Cam Position Sensor 4) Spark plug wires 5) Distributor.

I enlisted the help of a friend who is a volvo mechanic. he said he hasn't been stumped like this before. Swapping was done by a friend along with the smoke test , o2 sensor , ect change. he also tested the wiring from the crank sensor to the ecu. he said it read fine but that doesn't actually mean there isnt a problem becuase there could still be a short.

His next thought is the trouble is in the wiring harness and i might need to replace it.

Today when i drove it it started hesitating as soon as i drove away. hesitated when cold and hot. city driving and freeway.

This evening i got back in the car and drove about 2 miles on city street and no hesitation. So i got on the freeway and drove about 15 miles no hesitation. Got off the freeway waited at a stop light started driving and the hesitation started happening. drove about another mile and it kept doing it. really driving me crazy will thats the update.

hi, i have a 1996 850R and it started having the same issues that you described. and i have replaced all the part that did and more. i just did a smoke test last week and found a leak at the PTC on intake tube which i'll seal tomorrow. i keep getting CL Fault =16 on laptop OBD2 software. I was wondering what you finally found the problem to be. Love this car, keeping it forever. Thanks, Jay
