Shiftlock Release is stuck - Help

Shiftlock Release is stuck - Help

Hi all,

The Shiftlock Release on my 99xc70 is stuck in the 'on' position. The car drives and shifts gears normally (even out of park), but the key will not come out of the ignition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you saying that you key is stuck in the ignition?

Is that release button besides the shifter knob have to be pressed down to make the knob move?

Can you be more specific?

Yes the key is stuck in the ignition. when the car is turned off, it is almost back at the Zero position, but it is not being allowed to fall completely back into position.

The car starts, and drives regularly, but I cannot remove the key from the ignition once I have shut off the car.

The shiftlock release button seems to be stuck in position, in has not sprung up from being depressed earlier today.

I may remove the console and see if there is a spring that has come loose.

Any other suggestions?

We had the same problem with our 1998 V70. I sprayed a small amount of silicone lubricant (using the plastic tubing that came with the can I bought) behind the release button. Then I carefully was able to work the release free (had to pry on it slightly to get it to pop free). Sprayed a little more after that and worked the release button several times making sure it was operating freely. This was a few months ago - no problems since.

I had this problem with few of my other cars..not volvo.

Lots of times the steering mechanism ,which is one of the theft deterant systems, locks in place without the key so the thief cant steer the car if he happens to start it.

Sometimes you have to put a sharp tug on the wheel.. left or right to remove the key.

As the poster above suggested slubricating the system might help grease the key out.

Your right you might have to see why the shift lock is not engaging too.. might be a spring or might be the connection either mechanical or electrical which which syncronizes with the ignition key.

If thats not the problem then perhaps there is something up with the key itself or the ignition key hole mechanism.

With a sharp knife blade it is possible to pry the button up. Good luck

....or pull it up with pliers. then spray some lube in there. first i tried wd40 and that made it worse. then i sprayed in some white lithium grease. don't know if that's the best thing, but the button seems to work nicely now.

...and THANKS SO MUCH for this forum! my key was also stuck in the ignition. i thought for sure it was the switch/ tumblers.. until i did a search here on the subject. oh MAN i would have wasted a bunch of time and money on that one!

Cause of the button sticking: Cokes and grime spilt over years of ownership...at least that's been my experience. If you ever take the center console out you'd be surprised at what you'll find down there.

But anyway, glad you got it all working again.

Ive had the key stuck in the ignition and put the car in neutral, reversing it by pushing, thus resetting the ignition to the start position. The key then started the car and it worked. This might not be related to the same issue, but it might be an alternative to the shiftlock.

Key is usually stuck becuse the actual plastic button
is broken not gummed up.
Cleaning it out is always nice but replacing the shift knob is usually the answer
