Volvo Repair Database Volvo 850, S70, V70 Front Wheel Bearing Replacement - Video

Post by rspi »

Over the past 5,000 miles or so I have heard my front right wheel bearing making a little noise. It hasn't gotten much worse but it's best to replace them before they come apart or tear something else up. I have a 1995 Volvo 850.

I used a OEM Volvo bearing (so I was told) which I purchased from eBay. I have read that a company named FAG makes bearings for Volvo. They also make the bearings for Timken. Anywho, I would like to think I have a bearing that will last another 227,800+ miles, that's why I went with Volvo. Unfortunately I have read that someone had an OEM bearing go out on them in less than 15,000 miles. We'll see (I plan on driving this car for some time).

This post was great help changing the wheel bearing in a 2000 V70 x/c. I deviated from what Robert showed by removing the strut assembly instead of the control arm. this allowed the axle to be easily slid out of the bearing hub. I used a steel rod in the top hole on the hub where the caliper bolt penetrates to stabilize the casting to R &R the bearing hub.
Robert has many videos showing fixes on our cars. Just wanted to say thanks.

I referred to VADIS for the procedure and it is essentially as you show it.
One thing is that VADIS refers to applying a 3-4mm wide bead of metal adhesive around the outer sections of the spline on the axle before inserting the axle into the new bearing. The metal adhesive is Volvo part#116137-0.
I have never heard of metal adhesive.
My tendency would be to apply some anti seize but I certainly would not call it an adhesive.
Did you or do others apply something to the spine at assembly?
Thks,

Thanks for the video Robert, that's a great help. The difference in price between a Volvo part and a pattern part is extraordinary. Volvo are at least three times the price. I was told Volvo use the same wheel bearings as Rolls Royce... at the price they charge I jolly well hope so ;-)

I think I paid about $95 US for the one I got from eBay.

£368.64 (GB Pounds) for a pair inc delivery. That's from Volvo, was your ebay bearing Volvo branded?

I started feeling a little shake at 70 mph, and in the cold weather I can here a low growl that is load dependent on the driver side. Classic bearing noise.

Ordered all the parts, but will wait for warm weather to do the deed.
