1998 S70 Motor Replacement

Hello Everyone,
I have a 98 S70 with 160,000 miles on it that my wife had to borrow to (see https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=61429) and on her way home "the car just quit" I believe she hit something on the highway that gashed the oil pan and then ruined the motor. This car blue books for $1500. It is my 'comfortable old slipper' the vehicle that I get in to escape. Any advice as to whether I should bother putting a motor in her, and if so, where might I find a motor economically ?

The engines are fairly common and you should be able to scare one up at a local yard.

I know that either of the site sponsors, Southern Vo-Vo or Volvo Salvage could get you a good salvage engine for a right price but the freight to New York might eat up the savings. Tom's Foreign in Connecticut goes through tons of Volvo's and they are considerably closer. Erie Vo-Vo can get you one as well but I've always found them to be considerably more expensive than the competition. Even with the motor freight it is worth an inquiry to our site sponsors to see what they have.

Erie might be a tad pricey, but they stand by their guarantee. I had to replace an engine through them and it was a show your original paperwork and no questions asked affair. Truck freight to you from Erie should be about $100. If they have one in stock, you should be able to scare up an engine from them in the $900-1000 range. When I got mine, stock was low.

Erie is not cheap, but they won't sell you junk. I just bought a used engine from them for my 98', and it's fantastic. It was very clean, no sludge with only 96k on it. I have driven 1500 miles with it now and I'm pleased. No oil consumption, and no blue puffs on start up.

I can only recommend Erie if you want to go that route. And if the rest of your car is clean and in good shape, why not save it?

another nice benefit of engine swapping: change out the coolant hoses, change out the rear main seal, change out the oil cooling lines, change out the timing belt, water pump, etc etc etc....basically replace everything that wears out.

every job that's a pain in the ass with the engine in the bay, you can do for minimal time and money with the motor on a stand, and you'll be at a solid stage 0 right out of the box. replace the car instead of the motor, and unless you've got service records showing that everything was done recently, you're gonna have to do it all with the motor installed.

...best part is Erie is an easy drive to/from OP location, saving freight charges.

Only real Bills fans know where Hamburg NY is...just an apple orchard park away...

Definitely worth re powering a good S70 for the western NY climate
