1985 245dl transmission swap question

Hi The overdrive on my wife's 245 apparently got stuck on and when I put it in reverse it moved a few feet shuddering then stopped moving in reverse. All forward gears are fine, when in reverse you get no movement and just a slight whirring sound. My 1987 244dl has a "real" fifth gear which seems to be less frought with problems and imho more usable in everyday driving. My question is will a transmission like the one in my 87 bolt up to her 85.

Any 5 speed manual trans will fit. The later the better. The earlier gearboxes had more failure tendencies. The driveshaft, coupling, and perhaps the clutch cable will probably be different as well as the flywheel, clutch assy, and the rest of the works.
