I have a 98 V70 T5 and have a check engine light. I used a code reader and got codes p0455, p0102, and p0172. My research leads me to a large evap leak and maybe a bad mass air flow sensor. Would they be related? I would appreciate if somebody could point me in the right direction.

p0172 is usually just a vacuum leak, the MAF may or may not be having issues. Start by tracking down and fixing all vac leaks. Then clear the codes, see what comes back.

What is the best way to search for and fix vacuum leaks? I am not experienced in doing this.

Visual inspection first. There is a large J hose that fits on the evap canister that often tears. Get the car up on stands or Ramps and look with a flashlight ..follow the hoses on the path back the canister

On my 99 this canister lives back by the right rear wheel.

Check the purge valve hoses too , under the radiator plastic lip, driver side. Follow these back as well.

Find that vacuum leak before you chase those other codes. It is common to have a large leak throw a MAF code on a good MAF

It takes 100 miles of driving to run the evap test loop so you need a week driving in between resetting the check engine light and knowing if you have fixed it!

I looked for this evap canister and did not see it. Does anybody know exactly where it is on a 98 V70?

Check under the driver's side fender, you have to look up from underneath. The other location is back near the fuel filter, but that may be more common on an 850.

You can check the vacuum hoses in the engine bay for leaks by spraying them with starting fluid. If the idle surges, then the spray hit a vacuum leak. No substitute though for careful visual inspection.

Hey there,

On my 99 S70 T5 the evap canister is clasped right behind and to the right of my fan on top. Goolge a pic because it sure doesn't look like a "canister". Hope that helps.

Purge valve maybe?

The evap canister is a black box about the size of a Bible.

It is on the right side underneath, tucked up just ahead of the rear wheel. Item #2, EVAP Canister.

That's a nice diagram, note also the shape of the canister, will help you recognize it when you find it. The diagram shows the "near the fuel filter" option but don't give up if you don't find it there, check up front too.
