XHeart I like photos too but they can't show you the lack of return actuation on a solenoid. The video I posted on this thread shows what I mean, and for this solenoid no return is normal. The video was on post number 6.

Slow going here. I have another AW55-50SN in a different car that has lost 3rd gear so I'm grappling with that as well as this.

Ordered a mig welder online so I can finally learn how to weld and stitch up this cracked drum. I'm keen on getting this transmission re-installed in the next 2-3 weeks. I've refurbished the valve body with a Transgo kit.

I have welded the cracked drum and closed up the hairline cracks.

Having burrs on the inside of this drum has caused the friction plates to be forced together instead of allowing fluid pressure to do the job.

As you can see on the friction plates there is no friction material and the result is metal on metal contact. This is what causes the lack of reverse due to 1st gear and reverse gear plates binding to each other.

Causes?? Lack of regular fluid replacement and metallic filings finding their way to places they shouldn't.

I'm hoping to order a friction set for this transmission soon as funds allow. I'll keep updating as progress occurs.

cn90's encouraging note on VIDA DiCE, read it >> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=56799, it makes me take up Mike's repair of solenoid.

Why...
2001 V70XC with 151,000 miles flares back in 3rd when it should have moved up to 4th while going above 3000RPM.

It has become frequent during the hotter afternoons -- into more than an hour of casual driving.
The symptoms are not there during the morning drive.

Is it a simple hot transmission fluid issue?
I have performed simple D&F, and now drain and fill like an oil change around thanksgiving in last two years. Fluid color on stick is just right.

Would a DIY of valve body service including Transgo-kit, replacement of the S1 thru S5, and servicing SLS, SLT, and SLU give transmission a fighting chance?

Better send VB for rebuild. Pretty sure it has worn parts, which nearly impossible to diagnose in garage without proper equipment.

Yes, transmission shifts beautifully after VB rebuild.

The VB from this car was first fitted to wife's 2002 XC70 in an attempt to faultfind a missing 3rd gear (long story and happy ending) so I know it's a good unit.

The cracked drum was just replaced tonight with a very generous offering from one of the forum members here (he knows who he is and I'm certain he prefers anonymity right now

I couldn't bring myself to trust my learner standard welding which may have given way at any moment.

Still need to replace the B4 servo cover which I stole for the wife's car and replace the VB loom however I feel a sudden surge in motivation, even with our cold weather.

Will post up the results good or bad as soon as it's fitted and running.

Hi Mike,
Where did you source the new valve body loom from? it looks like its for the newer VB models (>2002)?

I'm pretty sure it was from Tasca Parts. I've had it lying around for about a year now.

One of the connector colors for the solenoids is not matching however the pinouts at the loom connector are fine.
