1997 V70 MAF sensor siemens 1537-1 174-97

Post by carisb63 »

Have rencently have had the engine management light come on. Took the car to garage for code reading, however, we werent given any code, just a print out giving a fault diagnosis, which says air intake temperature fault. We have also been getting infrequent problems with starting and stalling straight away, and then starting normally straight away. We have now had a few occassions where the car will start but run very rough as though not firing correctly on all 5 cylinders, this is resolved by a simple spray of WD40 around the MAF sensor and distributer cap. Could this be the MAF sensor needing to be replaced and would that be the Siemens number mentioned above. If this is the case where could we purchase it from as we cannot find one on the internet we seem able to find Bosch but nothing that resembles the one fitted.

We would be grateful for any advise.

If the one fitted is a Siemens, that is very likely the problem. For your car, it is very rare that a MAF other than Bosch will work.

The best way to test this is to unplug the MAF and drive around. If the symptoms improve, the MAF is a problem and you must replace it with a Bosch unit. This test will set a check engine light and throw a MAF code, so you will need an OBD2 reader to reset it. Without a MAF plugged in the car goes into default air:fuel mixtures and this is fine for the short term, only fuel economy will suffer.

Bosch is the only way to go for these cars. I have had nothing but trouble with any other brand of MAF in my car.

If Somerset is in the UK this car COULD be a 10 valve variant which came with Siemens engine management, hence the Siemens MAF.

What engine designation is on the front engine cover if it's still readable? The B5252S engine is what I was referring to.

UK eBay seller parts_monster is where you'll find a Siemens MAF.

Canada may be another place to locate a Siemens MAF. 10 valve variants were rife there.
