The other day I parked the car to take the dog for a walk. 20 min later I come back start the car and put it in D to drive away. Hit the accelerator and I was slowly rolling downhill (as the car was parked with the nose up). Some unusual sounds up front.
Anyway, had to have the car towed home and started calling around to see how much money I was looking at to get this fixed, assuming that something had gone wrong with the transmission.
As there was nothing unusual going on before I parked the car, I figured there was a possibility that something else was up.
During the troubleshooting it become obvious that the RHS drive shaft appeared to be the issue. At the time I was thinking maybe a broken shaft or something.
Took the drive shaft out to take a look and I pull it out all in one piece. Definitely not a broken shaft. With the front wheels removed I started the engine and noticed that all the unusual sounds were now gone.
Taking another look at the shaft I see that the support bearing was no longer in the place where it needed to be. Conclusion.... driveshaft had come out of the transmission.
I was tempted to put the bearing back in place and put it back together, but I don't want to have this happen in a few years. I could be going on the highway at high speed. That would not be good.
The bearing needs to be replaced, it is not entirely quiet. But I am wondering why did it come out? Isn't there supposed to be some locking mechanism on the transmission end?
I replaced both driveshafts 2-3 years ago with new ones from FCP Groton.
