1998 V70 Thermostat replacement

Post by djzuelke »

An above freezing day allowed me to attempt the replacement of the original thermostat which apparently was opening too soon. The back bolt stripped and necessitated my cutting a slot so that a hand-held impact tool with a screwdriver bit could be used. Success! Not only does the engine now heat up rapidly, but runs smoother. Best of all, the heater now throws lots of heat and I dare say the mileage has improved. Prior to replacement, the heat gauge needle stayed just below the half-way point. Now, the needle rests slightly above half-way. A relatively simple fix resulting in big rewards!
