03 S60 T5 throttle body question

Post by igel513 »

Hello everyone, I'm back. Just a general question re: throttle body. When the engine is cold, does the butterfly close completely? I hope butterfly is the right term for the metal sheet that regulates air intake. I cleaned the throttle body and noticed it is slightly open. Will that affect the starting of the engine? Is it supposed to be slightly open to have enough air during idle? Thanks again.

The standard opening angle is anywhere from 17 degress to 24 degrees depending on aspiration and engine type. So yes the flap should be open at idle.

The angle you find it at when it is not powered up is more than it would be open on a fully warmed up engine but likely a bit less than the angle it will be open for a cold started engine. The angle you see with it not being controlled by ECM is the default angle that would give a high idle so the engine would not stall and cause you to lose power steering and brake assist if a wiring or other fault occurred and the ECM was not able to operate the throttle.
