1996 850 => Check my Plugs Please

Post by jose456891 »

I been dealing with random P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305 codes. I just got OEM plugs and installed them. Here is a picture of my old Autolite plugs, they look OK to me, but they are drenched with oil on the threads. The boots were dry as a bone, but the threads were wet. The electrode part is dry.

Can you please share your comments on how my old plugs look?

Just by eye the gap looks too large but the coloration isn't bad. Oil on the threads doesn't mean anything other than that there was some oil pooled up under the spark plug wire caps.

I am interested to hear if anybody sees something awry because the electrodes and insulators look pretty good to me.

Those plugs may be the wrong heat range, pretty sure Autolite coppers should be 3923 for a non-turbo. I would try some Bosch coppers FR7DC (7955) as a cheapo way just to know you have good plugs in there.

The OE plugs had a smaller gap, very small center electrode, and multiple prongs. Hopefully this is it, otherwise I'm moving to cap+rotor/coil/wires/fuel relay.

Thanks!

Gap should be .028 inches for an N/A. You want to make sure it's correct before installing the new plugs.

The fuel is a little rich from the looks of the plugs but is still good besides even in the cylinders. I've put this in my brother's 3003 GS300 as the guys in those forums like them. I will try these next time around. The Manager at Extreme Spark told they rarely get repeat business for the same car.

Sure you can. They sell barrel thickness gauges for them. You put the right barrel over the center electrode and press in the outer grounds. Its a specialty tool and are hard to come by. Bosch now states not to gap as they are preset. You can also use any form of wire type gaping tool.

oops - i missed where you said you already put in OEM plugs. That's a great start.

If you do go to the next stage of parts, wires must be Bougicord and cap/rotor must be Bosch. Coil is very rare to go bad on these cars.

Wow! Learn something new EVERYDAY. I have always read that you should not try to gap those.
