clatter on start up xc90 t6

Post by Jrsimp78 »

Hi all, I have a xc90 t6 that I bought as a project with 2x burnt out ex valves. I sorted this but noticed whilst working on it that one of , possibly both of the cam wheels have account 1/8 of a t urn of free movement. Does any one know if this is normal (dual cvvt). It makes a horrible clatter and inconsistent noise when starting. I thought this was the starter as I checked it out and found the gears inside to be badly worn. After a few months of suffering the noise, I have now replaced the starter and the clatter noise is still there and although cranking quicker is more difficult to start. I have read a post that suggests that it could be contamination on the mounting flange of the state & causing issues with the signal from the engine speed sensor.
So back to my main, question re the clatter noise. I'm concerned that this could be the free movement
in the cam pulleys ? Or are they supposed to be free ish. Anyone who has done a cam belt on a volvo with dual cvvt will have seen this.
It run perfectly well on tick over and when free revved the only issue is a very slight misfire at 1500rpm and 50mph. I thought this could have been a weak coil but I'm now thinking it could be linked with the start up noise and possibly the burnt put valve issue. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
John

Clatter on start now understood. Damaged flywheel ring gear teeth. In fact a section about 100mm long with no teeth. Ouch.
