Let's say you found a set of wheels that you absolutely must have but come to find out they won't fit your car bc they have a different lug pattern.
The Volvo is 5x108, the wheels you want are 5x114.3(Japanese/other aftermarket lug pattern)
These adapters bolt to your factory hub, you then bolt the 5x114.3 wheels onto the adapter and boom you have your sexy wheels safely bolted to your sexy ass Volvo. All for way cheaper if you bought them brand new.
I have two left, (2) 15mm hubcentric adapters/spacers.
