98 V70 AWD SEW Function on Transmission

Post by rmmagow »

My car came equipped with these keys right below the gear shift lever. I know what they are for. Lately I've very slightly detect a loss of performance in my car. Real slight, like the difference in how a motor will run in damp conditions, the smooth application of power with slight changes in the gas pedal seems to have gone soft, i.e. more pressure needed to get it moving. Bla Bla Bla, I don't think my Sport setting is working right, the tiny led still lights up but the near immediate disengage of lock-up seems to be not working right, still releases but more like in the E setting. Anyway to definitively test the SEW function to know it is actually working?
Thanks

Is the boot on the throttle cable where it comes through the firewall (and/or the plastic screw on the metal bracket near the throttle body) broken? That disabled my kick-down switch and made for a lot of play in the gas pedal.

All looks OK.
Symptoms, the car just feels "flat". Before acting up, even slight pressure on the gas would give a nice feel of smooth thrust. Now, it feels like I have the tranny switch in "E" when in fact it is in "S". OK, we aren't talking about a real hard-core lack of power here, just slight sluggishness. With the switch in "S" even a very little pressure on the gas pedal at highway speeds would disengage the lock-up, now I seem to need to go a 1/4 pedal to make it release. Basically, "S" and "E" feel the same. "W" does what it is supposed to do as far as I can tell. On a good day the difference between "S" and "E" isn't all that dramatic but there was always something. So, is there a definitive way to see if the "S" and "E" functions are working? What would I call this switch if I were trying to find a replacement.

Interesting. I am sure there is a way to check for power but for actual functionality i am not too sure. Did they work fine before? Sport mode pretty much means at 1/2 pedal pressure from take off it revs up to 5 to 6k and shifts at about 30 or 35. Where as there inn E it is quite less.

Not too sure friend. Interesting subject will follow

There is no slack in the throttle cable, even the exposed part, at all before the throttle moves? That's really all I can think of unless the throttle position sensor is acting up.

I can't see Ebay at work, but this is what it would be:

I can't see ebay at work either, but I'm the network engineer so :-)
I'm going to pull and clean the switch and see if I can glean some electrical things with a meter, like looking for continuity changes when pressing buttons. I did another single drain-n-fill on the tranny just in case but the fluid doesn't look bad at all. Now that it is slightly warmer I'll go through a rubber line check again and perhaps a quick throttle body cleaning. Funny observation, my mileage per the computer is generally just a little over 23 MPG mixed driving, 5 to 600 miles a week. It has crept up to 25 MPG but I haven't changed my route or how I drive and infact generally drive in excess of 70 MPH, same gas stations etc. The car's computer hasn't been zeroed out in the last 2000+ miles. If I remember correctly I did conduct a rather unscientific study "E" vs "S" mileage and at that time it sort of pointed to E being a tad better which is making me lean towards the S function no longer doing its thing. I should have my head examined for obsessing over a 16 year old car w/215K on it and just be happy the damn thing still runs.

The MPG difference is more than likely just the warmer weather that's slowly been creeping in. I've gained back 4 MPG since it started going above 50 degrees.
