96 850 GLT Dies at stops, RPM drops only at night

Post by kyle208 »

Issue has occurred for the past 3 months or so. When driving at night, the rpm drops from about 1500/2000 - 1000/1500. Also, sometimes when I come to a stop the car will die completely, and it may take 2 or three attempts to start again. Because it doesn't happen in the day time I think the cold air may be a factor.

Recently I cleaned the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body with appropriate cleaners, this seems to have had no effect. A mechanic I met suggested it may be the idle air control valve, but I want to be sure of that before spending over $200 for a new one. I have only had the car for 4 months, but previous owners took great care of it.

Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

There are no other symptoms I've noticed and no OBD II codes.

The things to check the IAC valve for would be broken / cracked hoses. Possibly the valve itself being dirty or sticky.
Clean valve with carb./ throttle body cleaner. Replace cracked IAC hose/s. I had seen one in the junkyard that was likely there for a cracked IAC hose. What a shame for them. I found useful parts.

Neither fix, or both should add to more than about $40.

Also, do a visual of all vacuum lines you are aware of. If you are not aware of yours, they may be indicated on a tag located on the underside of your hood. You can search this site as well.

Good luck.
