Occasional sharp clunk / knock sound from the passenger side of my V70 Wagon after strut/tie rod/control arm replacement.
Not particularly tied to rough roads/potholes. The front bounce test does not seem to make noises. I've had a look at what I did and everything looks tight. (One thing I did do was leave the plastic splash shields in the control arms).
I've been working my way down a list of noise sources--the last was a broken side marker light on the passenger side (and I can hear both the door panel and headrest rattling and have clips on order to re-seat the door panel).
But the one seemingly coming from under the hood is annoying me. I can see that the top engine vibration damper is shot (and plan on getting a new bushing).
Could I be hearing a bad lower motor mount?
Or???

Bad motor mount under the crank on the timing belt side. Piece of wood and gently jack up engine to see. Or the strut mount is broken. Try to twist the top of the mount, it shouldn't move. I'm not sure this is 100% diagnostic but a bad mount will make a racket inside.

I agree. The top nut test is 100% diagnotic for a bad spring seat - the nut should not spin.
With that top torque mount bushing not doing its job, the engine will flop all over the place and put extra stress on the front lower engine mount mentioned by rmmagow.

Now sorted--I replaced the top motor mount (sort of) see this thread:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=62842
Lower motor mount looks soft, but not destroyed--I will get to it, though.
Ozark Lee once again has the answer--in this thread https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=33170 he says in his experience clunking after a strut job is probably from the end links not being tight enough--sure enough, when I rechecked every bolt, (including taking off the top center bolt to check the mount) it was the upper end link bolt that was not snugged down.
Did that (and also clipped the end of the splash shield in the lower control arm where it was rubbing) and voila--no noise.
