Do you by any chance know how your mechanic was able to remove the rusted driver side axle off the trans-axle? I'm stuck with the same condition as yours, I think. The passenger side came out with ease, but noticed a lot of rust along the splines. I'm thinking that the driver side has seized due to rust. I saw this video: that showed a method of using a slide-hammer/vice grip combo to pull a stuck axle out. would you say it was something like that? Any ideas? Anyone?

Pick up slide hammer and axle puller, a crowfoot like tool, on loan. That is safest after a dozen turn and pull. Remember I broke mine prying.

I had thought about the 'crowfoot' type pullers, but did not think there would be a big enough lips to grab onto. However, I'm going to give that a try rather than the vice grip/puller technique .

The corroded driver side inner CV joint is finally off my 2002 XC70. It was quite a struggle and big relief.
Very unorthodox, but I drilled into the inner CV joint housing and put a good size bolt in order to get a good grip with a vise grip before using a homemade slide hammer to pull it off the corroded trans axle spline. It took quite of bit of gentle to hard hammering but it finally let loose.
I was thinking of trying the axle puller adapter from Autozone as suggested earlier, but I honestly thought that it would not give me enough leverage to crack this axle off. I had struggled quite a bit with it using so many kinds of wedges, pry bars and hammers.
Included are the images of the corroded shaft and inner spline. Frankly, I had expected some amount of ATF to be visible on the inside (as was the case on my S70). All I see on this one (2002 XC70) is corrosion and no wetness at all. The oil in the bottom of the seal is from rust penetrating spray which did nothing at all.

Cleaned the rust out with rag and some spline grease, then applied some more to the axle and installed with ease.
One more thing: I read somewhere in a post about the possibility of the axle clip falling off as it is pulled. I have to say though that there is really no place for the clip to fall into. It is a solid wall on the other side.
