Any good way to silence the glovebox?

Post by luketrash »

My glovebox sqeaks like a cricket on methamphetamine... Last night when I had the dash apart, I took time to pull out every screw, put a red paper washer on it and soak it in silicone spray. I sprayed silicone around the back of the lip on the glovebox too, which quieted things down somewhat, but it still squeaks...

This is a familiar noise, as nearly every Volvo 240 I had did the same thing. However, those gloveboxes were easy to remove and work with, so I put a strip of foam tape between the glovebox and dash.

Sure it's not your dash? If that's not it, then felt aroudn the closure of the door itself. I've heard of others having this issue too but luckily I never have. I had the knee bolster cover on the drivers' side do this when I first bought my car but somehow it went away on it's own. The dash also above the instrument panel squeeks some from time to time...seems temperature related.

My glovebox never squeaked but it did have a slight rattle after I fixed the latch. I bent the latch brace up and down, slightly, until I had a happy compromise on a smooth door closure and no rattles.

Is your squeak in the glovebox door or the glovebox itself?

Hey - I had a number of sqeaks on my '93 850. What I ended up doing was going to my local Toyota dealership (don't ask me why Toyota...they just seemed to want to help) and bought a bunch of felt tape. It come in a sheet already pre-cut into 3/16" wide strips. Then, I pulled apart a bunch of things (door panels, where the console meets the upper dash, glove box door, etc.) and put the felt tape. Quiet as a mouse....at least until I got used to the quiet and noticed other things.....how elusive are these noises. Anyway, give that a try.

It's not the dash cap.. it's the glove box assembly, but I'm not sure what it is. Now that the silicone has soaked for a day, things are getting quieter. It COULD just be the two rubber nubs on the glove box door where they meet the gray furry glovebox.

My 240s have all made the same exact sound.. it's because the glovebox latch is loose and allows everything to rattle..

The glovebox latch area on my 850 looks like someone pryed it open at one point with a screwdriver or something?!

Just an update.. The cricket sound was most likely tied to the big plastic cover under the glovebox on the passenger's side. I removed it last night and put adhesived backed felt along the edges and in the middle to deaden vibration.

So far, I hear only silence from that side of the car!

My grandpa had a joke about his new buick that went along the lines:

"The cars these days really come right from the factory with a personal touch. They even had your grandma's seat personalized."

I didn't get where he was going with it, but then he pointed over at the "Air Bag" logo on the passenger's side above the glove box.
