99 V70XC Fuel pump question.

Post by Ozark Lee »

After nearly a collective million Volvo miles I have finally had a fuel pump failure. The bad news is that it is on the XC. The OEM part for the XC is 9470674 and, in looking at the pictures, the assembly is substantially different than the standard FWD fuel pump. Can I change the insert in the XC assembly like can be done in the FWD versions or is it necessary to replace the entire cartridge?

There are a bunch of eBay sellers with the insert listed but I have long since learned that eBay sellers are notorious for selling incompatible parts. FCP only lists the cartridge.

What say those who have changed out the AWD pumps?

Hi Lee,

I am not an AWD expert but I remember seeing a thread about insert Walbro GRJ 235:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 7&start=42

I know for FWD model, the insert is Bosch 69693, but for AWD model, what is the Bosch insert number?

If you cannot find the Bosch insert, then I guess Walbro GRJ 235 will be fine.

According to the thread below, the XC came from the factory with Walbro, interesting!

The ebay listing below shows the fuel pump made by TRE Performance:

Since I don't know much about TRE Performance, you may want to stick to Walbro.
It looks like people order from the UK.

Time to cut the floor open...

I finally had time to cut the hole in the floor and get the old pump out. Indeed the OEM is a Walbro GRJ 235.

The rub here is that I can't find a kit that includes the filter sock anywhere in the US. They can be had in Europe but my wife is getting tired of dumping gas in the Suburban so I need to get it fixed sooner rather than later. All of the replacement kits I could find domestically were actually for a FWD system. and I really don't feel like re-inventing the wheel to get this done.

I wound up just buying a new pump assembly from eEuroparts. It is a "Professional Parts Swedan" brand which I hate to do but $109.00 fits the budget a heck of a lot better than $334.00 for an OEM.

I guess the answer to the question is that you can get a new insert but if you need it quickly you are looking at buying the assembly.

I am wondering is one can do some MacGyver trick to make the FWD fuel pump (Bosch 69693) works in an AWD setup? Just wondering if one can do some MacGyver trick...

I also came across a post in S40 forum:
http://www.30forty50.com/forum/topic/12 ... ph-340gss/

The S40 model also uses the Walbro GRJ 235, but according to the post above, Walbro GSS 340 works just fine!

Note for Walbro GSS 340:
* It is about $78-$80 on amazon dot com.
* Modify the (+) and (-) terminals as in the link above.
* Re-use the old sock.

Bingo...
