Air Pump Relay, 1998 S70 T5

Post by io »

Hi Everyone,

I just got around to fixing my air pump a little while ago. The old one was filled with water so I got a new check valve and modified an existing VW pump as per the instructions on this site. Everything is back together but the pump still doesn't run (btw, I connected it to the battery before installing it in the car and it ran). I'm still getting the P0410 code.

I'm suspecting that either the relay or the solenoid valve is the problem. I think I'll try a new relay first because it's cheeper. I just wanted to make sure that the air pump relay is the one that is mounted beside the solenoid valve (just in front of the grille). I think it is marked "Air Pump / Cooling Fan Relay".

I am asking this because on either FCP Groton or E-Europarts it says that there are 2 of these relays per car.

Thanks,
Nick

There are two relays on your car.. the first will be the one for the two speed relay for your cooling fan.. the other is a one speed for the a.i.r. pump. The relay for your fan is on the top of your radiator and the one for the air pump is connected on your air pump.

The relays i have show number for volvo 3523871 and the radiator shows 1398845.

On a 98 S70 the air pump relay is up top under the hood on the left hand side right in front of the main fuse box. It's mounted in a kidney shaped enclosure with other relays and fuses. The 850's have the relay mounted down by the air pump.

To test the air pump you can remove the air pump relay and short together the two larger spade connectors that the relay plugs into. (The smaller spade connectors are the control circuit for the relay) You don't need to have the key turned on; the pump should run when the large spade connectors are shorted. Make sure you use a heavy guage wire or it will melt. You can also remove the relay cover and manually activate the relay to turn on the pump. To test the relay, you can swap it with the "main" relay which it right next to the air pump relay. If the air pump relay was bad, the car won't start.

Keep in mind the air pump only runs under certain circumstances, when the ECU tells it to run and it won't run at all until the ECU finishes running the secondary air monitor routines.

If you need more info go to volvospeed.com, in the forum for 98 and older, in the pinned section at the top there's one for common repairs and there's an extensive thread on the secondary air system.

here is how the air pump relay looks like. In my case it is next to the air pump and the middle abel connector is broken.

Hint: on the ImageShack - copy the link that say "direct link" - it is the last one below all the banners!
I first used the one called "Thumnail for forums" and it does not work for me.

I hope this time it will work

Best regards,

Ivo

Yes, you got it!
And very nice car by the way...I love the color! If built in '96, then I would say it's a model year '97 850.

Ohhh my look at all the snow ..guess that 4 wheel drive comes in handy!!! no Chinooks yet to melt it away? I loved that when during my short stint in calgary.

We have had no snow here this year out east..we have been in the 50F to 60F... was a green Xmas!

I emailed you about the questions you asked me IVO..and will wait for your reply.

IO; back to you as the owner of this thread. Your air pump relay is up top as I described, not down at the air pump.
