1984 740 turbo diesel - opinions?

Post by shegarty »

Hi all - I am usually wary of creating posts asking for opinions on the interweb but this forum is usually a safe place to get an honest opinion  So, after being nakedly Volvo-less for a couple of years now I stumbled across this find on Kijiji this morning. The body looks to be in decent shape with no visible rust. The sagging rear end doesn't really worry me too much. My biggest concern is that I know nothing of the Volvo diesels. This one says that it was rebuilt 15 years ago and now has 15K miles on the rebuild. I am hoping to check it out this weekend, is there anything specific I should know about a diesel of this vintage before doing so? I am well familiar with the other mechanicals of a this vintage of Volvo. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

The D24/D24T is not typically known for power. But if you treat it right, it will last a long time (a good 300K miles - I have one with 245K on it now, and used to have another with 211K on it). Some people dislike them because when they are mistreated they will fail. My only hope is that whoever rebuilt it 15K miles ago knew what they were doing.

There is a D24T forum you could check out too (D24T.com).
