1999 V40 Wont start. Update: failed timing belt tensioner

Post by shanegtr »

Just had a little issue with my V40 not wanting to start. My wife drove it to the shops without an issue, then around 20mins later I jump in it to go to work and it just cranked over with no attempted at starting, didnt even make an effort to even fire. Any ideas on places to start looking?

Check your fuel pressure.
Can you hear the fuel pump start when you turn key to position 1 ?

Good that you know the cause.
Guess you will do the T.belt etc at the same time to rule out any related area future work for the long term?

Hi Shane.
Sounds like you got lucky not damaging anything.
What kind of tensioner does it have? Hydrolic(auto) or manual.
Where did you get the kit from? And how much $? OEM?
Cheers Anthony.

Its a spring tensioner (see screenshot from dayco website) Kit is a Dayco - KTB316E. I brought it from a seller on ebay (fusion automotive, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DAYCO-TIMING ... 7c6&_uhb=1), around $440. They are not cheap, but the likes of Repco, auto one, covs etc... All wanted between $590 - $700 for the same kit. Only covs had them in stock in WA too.

Cheers and thanks for that.

Timing belt is on my to do list, likely order part from USA comes in around $250 OEM all up including water pump from memory. Will get other parts at same time, have been given estimated quote on shipping $60.

Got to make sure it is the right part and they made two different tensioners apparently.
Probably will have to inspect the part myself on tbe car but as you know access is tricky. Maybe try and get info off Volvo dealer.

Tried an ebay Vadis cd but no luck getting it running.
