1993-1998 Ignition Coil: anyone replaced it yet?

Post by cn90 »

My 98 S70 GLT runs fine, no issues but every time I go to the local junk yard and look at 1993-97 850 and 1998 S/V70 models, the ignition coil has been removed from the junk car.

So either people:
- have bad ignition coil and replaced it...or
- stock a used part "just in case".

So, my question is, has anyone replaced this ignition coil as shown below?

I've got five 850/x70 cars in the stable these days, all are high mileage except for a 125k 850, none of those have ever needed a replacement ignition coil. Same with the other 850 I've worked on for a friend. But I have 2 extra coils from the junkyard just in case ...

I have a few coils from the junk yards for diagnostics, but usually found they were not at fault.
I think they are bulletproof.

The fact is, they are so cheap at the junk yards, yet so expensive to purchase (Bosch) new.

So why not take one home just in case?

220km s70, 155km on 850 both original coils

Usually heat is the enemy and because they are away from the engine and not in the distributor
They should last a long time

The coil on my 94 850 bought the farm with about 188,000 miles on it. I purchased the one shown from FCP or Eeuro but it looks a bit different from the original coil installed in '94. I would have went to a yard but I needed my car working to get to work.
