Here's a comment from Roger D. He emailed it to me after using this bulb replacement page, and I'm posting this directly from his email:
I had light bulbs out on my '97 960 radio and had lived with it for (years probably) until I came to your web site and saw the procedure by Anthony. This gave me the confidence to make the bulb replacement. However I found some differences with my radio from that shown by Anthony and I wanted to pass these on.
To the tools list, I would add the following:
_ square-ended needle nose pliers
_ the Phillips-head screwdriver is a #2 for a good fit
_ thin-bladed flat-head (~1/4") screwdriver to turn the Honda bulbs into position
Then the following additions to the procedure:
_ The radio was blocked from being able to remove it by the automatic transmission shift handle with the engine off. Turn the engine on, and with your foot firmly on the brake, put the transmission in '2' or another position that provides enough clearance to pull the radio out. After the radio is out, put the transmission back in 'Park' and turn the engine off.
_ After removing the volume knob, remove the three rectangular knobs on the BASS, TREBLE, and FADER controls by pulling them straight off.
_ On my radio, when the faceplace came off, the circuitboard in which the bulbs are mounted did not come off with it. The circuitboard is attached to the radio with two Phillips head screws on either side of the digital display, and by four small twisted tabs through the circuit board. Remove the two screws, straighten the four tabs slightly to align with their slots, and the circuit board pulls straight off. You now have access to the back to remove the bulbs.
The rest of the procedure is as described, except that I found the thin split-blade screw-holding screwdriver to fit nicely in the back of the Honda bulbs and make it easy to tighten them into place.
To reassemble the radio, reverse the above steps.
Thanks for your help,
Roger D
