1995 940 Base, Air not blowing main vents.

Post by Spyros »

Hello everybody!

I'm looking to purchase a 1995 940 base sedan, I drove it today on a test drive and it ran beautifully with 170k miles on it. I did a thorough inspection and everything seems to be perfect except for two concerns. Please offer me any advice or knowledge you may have before I sink my money into this. Price is $2000

1. Air Conditioning works great, but it is only blowing out of the floor vents it seems. Regardless of fan speed or vent setting, even if I have it set for only the main vents, it blows only out of the floor vents. Vent knob seems to have no effect on where the air goes, but the fan speed knob works. If I hold my hand up to the main vents, I feel cold air there, just not blowing. The car does get cold from the floor vents.

2. I noticed a little darkness or 'wetness' around the oil filler cap, not like a burn just like an oily wet spot on the area immediately around the cap, on top of the engine. It could be just some spillage, or maybe was overfilled. Is this anything to worry about?

THANKS!!

As far as the oil residue around the oil filler cap is concerned I would just clean it all off and monitor it. If it comes back it is more than likely just the gasket on the cap itself. It might not be bad at all, who knows how long it has been since the motor was cleaned. Could just be residual oil over time.
The vent problem, on my 240 the vacuum hose broke and it did the same thing. Look for a small vacuum line coming from the fire wall and follow it and check condition of it. On my 240 it goes to the top of the intake manifold. If the line is good inspect the check valve it connects to.

Thanks so much for the info! I've been watching this thread like a hawk. Good to hear that these are most likely not serious issues. The seller actually got back to me today and said he fixed the vent issue. Ran a CARFAX too and looks like a good buy. Two owners, timing belt replaced at 102k miles, traded in and serviced at dealership 2 months ago and then sold at auction to the current seller.

For the sake of closure on this thread:

The seller lied about fixing the vents just to get me to drive out and see the car again, very shady guy. I used his lie to get him to drop the price another $100. Thanks to your help, I stopped the car 3 minutes down the road after buying it, plugged the vacuum line back into the valve on the firewall, and the vents came to life immediately!!

Thanks!
