1994 Volvo 850 Turbo Oil Cooler Rebuild Options

Post by Baptiste1106 »

Are their any local shops who rebuild oil cooler lines? To me it seems easy by just replacing the crimp and hose, that's it. Any suggestion for those who have dealt w/this.

I used the guy mentioned in the following thread. That was about 3 years / 30,000 miles ago.
No problems since.

You can rebuild your cooler hoses using angle grinder (to cut the crimp off), then use generic oil hose + Oetiker clamps. The clamps: you can use generic clamps (screw-type) but Oetiker looks more elegant lol...

Below is a thread on ATF cooler hose rebuild for $10, scroll down to see it. Same principle for oil cooler hoses.

@Baptiste1106,

Rebuilding the oil cooler hose is so easy. I don't know why you can't DIY using generic oil hose from local auto parts store. Instructions in the link I posted above. It will cost you some $10 for the hose and some clamps.

Oil cooler needs 1/2 inch barbs and hose. Transmission cooler needs 3/8 inch barbs and hose. You can definitely cut the stock hoses/clamp off and replace them with transmission cooler hose. Do not use fuel hose or coolant hose for the job, they are not up for the heat, pressure, or exposed to oil.

I went a step further and replaced the connectors with barbs on my Autozone radiator.

I took the oil cooler adapter with the oil tube/hose off at the engine to cut the the clamps to get the stock hoses off. My local Volvo dealer stocked all three o-rings for the adapter and the tubes.

For the records:

- TRANS Cooler Hose I.D. = 3/8-inch
- OIL Cooler Hose I.D. = 1/2-inch

Always use new Volvo O-rings:
- Radiator side (watch the metal clip, it only fits in one direction, search forum for info).
- Place a clamp over factory quick-connect clip.
- Tstat side. Caution, the Torx bolt may be stripped during removal. Get new Torx bolts before doing this job. Don't forget the rectangular seal at the Tstat housing. I posted info in the Tstat seals DIY thread.
