1999 xc70 slipping in reverse

Post by tranmkp »

Ok, this is a 1999XC70 - 130k miles - car slipping only in reverse, with or without driveshaft. Ordered a rebuild from volvo (from vin on car) 4speed not 5 speed.

Got new trans, installed, exact same issue, slips in reverse - no issues.

Took to dealer HO CODES from tcu - Nothing - nothing... cleared memory - double checked - no codes.

WHat are the chances of the exact same issue with a rebuild????

No, the torque converter goes between the motor and tranny.

Someone may want to confirm this but I spoke to someone changing a transmission today and he said that you likely have another bad tranny. He said that torque converters work or don't. They won't slip in reverse and work fine in forward gears.

+1. The torque converter spins in the same direction all the time, just like a flywheel would.

Methinks Volvo f***ed up the rebuild.

sidebar: it takes an upright engine and transmission.
I say, stabilize subframe - replace/restore ALL mounts and pads to eliminate sag.

Update? I'm curious because I also have reverse slipping in my 99 S70 AWD and wondered if transmission/motor mounts could be the cause of the issue.
